Here is a poem I wrote today and do wish to dedicate to ALL our men and women serving in Iraq and other countries!
He lays low in the bunker
as the shrapnel starts to fly
He wonders if this is it
the day they all will die.
He signals for those around him
it's time for change of plans
He knows they're in real danger
in this strange and foreign land.
The soldiers keep attacking
his troops are tired and tense
One sits writing home to mother
on this battleground and fence.
One lays crying who is younger
he just lost his older friend
the hit was fast and deadly
pulling back became the end.
One steadies his weapon higher
one arm tired from heavy weight
but he never budged an inch
surrender was not his fate.
A mass of shots light up the sky
in the middle of the night.
There's no turning back or giving up
This troop was going to fight.
Silently the Sargent nodded
They would run and forge ahead
No matter the cost-no matter what
They'd vowed no more dead.
They jumped the bunkers-leapt midair
They were covered in sweat and dirt
They charged the enemy by surprise
Many ran some died-some were hurt.
But they were fighting for their country
They'd vowed to protect this land
Soldiers weary and tired-women and men
We salute you all who take a stand.
Thank you all who serve in the Military!!
THIS is what MEMORIAL DAY is about!
