Happiness in Your Own Backyard
The day had been long-and stressful. It was late in the afternoon-just about the time the sun is setting, so I walked outside to check my birdfeeders in the backyard. Squirrels were also feasting on seed in between the mourning doves strutting across the yard. Some skittered away as I walked towards a feeder to check it. I was taken by surprise as a rabbit raced by me off into the woods. The sweet smell of honeysuckle vines enveloped me with its' purfume as I approached the feeder to check it. I stood for a moment enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of nature all around me-far off a redbird chanted to another nearby. Just when I was about to walk away-a small chickadee landed on a feeder closeby-so close for a moment I froze and just stared.
It seemed oblivious to my watching it and I heard its rapid chirping then began pecking away at the seed-now and then glancing up looking straight at me. It was so close I could have almost reached over and touched this small tiny bird who seemed curious at my presence. I just stood and smiled watching this creature who seemed so unafraid of my presence so close to his own. After feeding for a moment-it looked at me chirping and flew away. I watched as he flew out of sight-disappearing into the trees.
The sunset was now a glorious golden globe painting the skies with colors of brilliant orange, pinks and purples. I listened as a woodpecker pecked away at a tree in the distance. All these 'things' brought a smile to my face and a calmness filled my spirit. Sometimes we just forget there are still the most powerful healing properties in the beauty of nature and its' creatures. The next time that you get 'caught up' with stress just remember-a smile and renewal-for mind and soul can embrace you in your own backyard.
