Definitions: What Is A Misogynist? Term Used In A Comment With Reference To The Disciple Paul

Definition To Term Used On Blog

The disciple Paul was a misogynist! (Was the reference.)

Greek misogynia, from misein to hate + gynē woman

So then this means this person's opinion is that the disciple Paul was a woman hater.  Makes perfect sense to me.  Thank you for your opinion.

This conversation took place in discussion to a woman's reference to mediums and future tellers.  How there was a woman who was telling the future, and Paul made her be quiet, so he could cast the 'demons' out of her.  I think it's rather funny that this comment was put here, considering as I was reading about what he did, I thought, 'How dare this man tell this woman to shut up and not use her gift, when it's something God gave her at birth.'  So I think I'm in agreement that he has a tendency to be one of those depictions of the men in this world who want to shut women up, and being that this word means hater of women, I'd have to say that's correct.

Interesting comment.  I too have always had an issue with Paul.  Throughout the New Testament he puts down women, and it was obvious to me that he hated women. I can even remember my very religious grandmother and her friends having similar discussions.

Part of this is a reflection of the times in which Paul lived.  In that culture women were second class citizens, and that tradition carries over today into all the Islamic countries, where all women are hated solely because of their gender and they are all treated like dogs.

The other issue Paul had may have had to do with something in his personal life.  I am told that before he became a Christian, Paul, (nee Saul) was married, but his wife left him after he converted.  Paul, being human after all, may have let his anger towards his wife carry over into a general hatred of all women.

For what it's worth Paul also states throughout the New Testament that many of the things he says are simply his own opinion. Paul's writings were personal correspondence to the leaders of the early churches, and were not included in the New Testament until some three centuries later.  IMHO, Paul himself probably would not have wanted everything he wrote to be included in the modern Bible.

These correspondences to the early church makes me feel like he wasn't a disciple after all.  He was just an ordinary man who was saying what he thought, whether right or wrong, and because he must have been in cahoots with the early formation of the churches, he was just a person trying to put together an organization that allowed him to take his hatred out on others.  Maybe it's just me, but I don't think he had a right to teach us things in the bible then, unless it was to teach us how what he was doing was wrong.
