The Truth Within
"The truth shall set you free". These words, spoken by Jesus, came to me when I was thinking about what it meant to be true to myself. What is the truth? Are some of us conditioned to believe that there is only one truth? Are many of us bombarded with so many truths that we have difficulty choosing the right truth?
Our parents represent the first place in life where truth is taught to us. Our peers, our school systems, the government and religions, all continue to impart their truths upon us. By the time we get around to living our truth, it becomes quite apparent that we are really living through the lense of other people’s truths which we have taken on as our own.
For much of our lives, we are not even aware that our supposed individual truth is really not ours at all. But if we are to look at our beliefs, our lifestyle, and each decision we make, it is obvious that everything has been adopted from something or someone else. In many cases, this does not necessarily translate into a negative influence in our lives. We feel safe and secure, knowing that we at least have some system of truth by which we can conduct our lives.
It wasn’t until I decided to ask for more of the kind of love and faith that Jesus had, that I realized I still allow certain truths outside myself to rule my life. So, is it possible that when we push to achieve new levels of awareness that we also identify old value systems which are still imposing themselves upon us? And how far back do we need to go in order to find our original truth?
We can go back as far as our toddler years to see that we lost some, if not all, of our original truth. We have all strived to remain unique, yet also be part of the norm. We spend our entire lives wanting to remain different, but we also wanting to "fit in".
I suggest that our original truth has always been with us, it’s just buried underneath everything we have adopted here on Earth. We started out as pure love, pure energy, pure God. Whatever word you want to use, we all originated from one source. This source holds the truth, which shines through each of us in a different and unique way. Hence, it is about going back to a time before our soul incarnated as a human on Earth.
It is difficult to attempt to explain how one can master this process in one short column. Key to the process, though, is being able to have a firm belief, at all times, that you are connected to God, to Spirit. You are not connected to the Earthly things you think make up who you are. Once your faith in Spirit becomes stronger than your faith in the Earthly world, you can move through the truths outside yourself with grace and ease. You can recognize that no matter what anyone else holds true for themselves, or even for you, your truth is cemented in something bigger than you, yet very much a part of you.
Once you have spent time cultivating your belief in that one source which is divine in nature, your are ready to practice your truth on Earth school. You must be willing to speak and act that truth at all times, without fear of not belonging to the school, the church, the family, or the community to which you have formed attachments. You must be willing to stand in your truth irregardless of what others might say or think of you.
In the moments I have been able to hold a space of truth for myself, I have experienced the feeling of being set free. It is a feeling of divine love and bliss, which emanates within me and through me, irregardless of the human "element" surrounding me. It is what Jesus lived, every moment of his life.
