In lesson one of Brigid Bishop's course on Astrology we learned about the Chart Wheel, the Natal Chart and the Rising Sign, which is your Ascendant or First House Ruler.

Let's continue our journey now on to the Second House.  After calculating your rising sign, it is most usual that your second house ruler will be the sign that follows in sequence, although it can shift based on the degree of your rising sign, it is usually the next subsequent sign in chronological order.  For purposes of example we will continue on with a Gemini Ascendant and utilize the sign of Cancer for our Second House Ruler.

The Second House contains the psychological profile through it's ruling sign and any planetary placements of how you feel and behave in regard to material things such as wealth, security (financial or material), belongings and possessions, what kind of a lover (sexually) you are, your diet, how generous or greedy you may be, your self worth and your personal values, sense of right and wrong, or your conscience so to speak.

So it follows that, when analyzing your chart or the chart of an object of your interest, you can gain a lot of insight into their psyche through the Second House analysis.

First, analyze the ruler of the Second House.  In our example, the ruler is Cancer, this will make the individual rather one to hold on to material possessions and to actually form an emotional bond with them.  Children with this placement frequently have a favorite blanket or stuffed animal that they cannot function well without.  These individuals assign a huge sentimentality to mementos and memorabilia and are often "pack rats", lots of little insignificant items in their possession with significant "meanings" to them.  Cancer Second House loves food, and will want to stick with what is familiar, often ordering the same food over and over and over at their favorite restaurant, they may enjoy fine dining or a quarter pounder with cheese, but they will be difficult in trying to convince them to try anything new.  When you CAN convince them and they DO like it, it gets added to their favorites list and you will be remembered each and every time they have that dish.  Sentimental is an understatement when speaking of these individuals.

Sexually these people are givers, nurturers, they aim to please and are pleased to please.  Ideally, they need to love the partner they are physical with, it is hard for them to separate sex from emotion.

Their value systems, when well aspected, tend to be very giving and nurturing and noble, wanting the best for all, they are a nurturing sign and wish to do the right thing.  When negatively aspected, they assume a victim mode, everyone is out to get them, and they will withdraw and become isolated and hold on tighter to everything they have for fear of having pain inflicted upon them.

Any planetary placements in the Second House will capitalize these energies, unless the planet is not well-placed in the sign ruling the house, in that case it will negate or weaken the energies, or make them manifest in a negative way.

So the Second House in your Chart has a lot to do with possessions and value systems.  In these areas you will manifest the energy of the sign ruling your Second House.
