Where Did The Devil Come From?

Where did The Devil come from?  Why is he depicted with horns and hooves, or by a goat-like creature.  Is this what he really looks like?  Is he real?

Well, in my personal belief system, evil does exist.  It manifests in many ways, and I do believe there are evil entities in the supernatural world.  I also believe that The Devil manifests in this evil energy, but where did he come from?

Ancient man was a nature worshipper.  He was in awe of the Sun, and the Moon, and the rivers and the weather.  These became his "Gods".  As nature worshippers, when ancient man had a productive harvest or a successful hunt they celebrated by worshipping and giving praise to the natural world around them.  Celebration of past successes evolved into rituals in advance of future endeavors to ensure success, so, after a successful hunt and prior to embarking on a hunt, ancient man would don the pelts and skulls and remains of there last successful hunt.

Ancients placed the head of their game over their own to dance and celebrate around that ancient fire..........they used "sympathetic" magick to achieve their goals.  Dancing around with the head of a deer on their shoulders prior to embarking on a hunt made them feel ritually charged with success, one of the earliest forms of magick.

New religions evolved.  Religions that worshipped a supreme being rather than the natural world around them.  Whenever a new religion evolves, recruiting converts becomes a primary occupation, whether through violence or education, it has happened throughout history.

When a new religion evolves, what happens to the Gods of the old religions?

They become The Devils of the new religion.

For some reason, in human nature, mankind has been unable to co-exist in harmony with those that have a differing belief system, and the easiest way to populate a new religion is to create a fear of the beliefs and symbolisms of an old religion.

Hence, the Judeo-Christian Devil was born from one of the Gods of an ancient pagan religion.

The Devil, to me, is an energy, not a manifested being as depicted herein.

Is There Room In Christianity for "Other Beliefs"?

The word "Lucifer" comes from 2 Latin words:

"Lux" meaning light and ferous, which means to bear or carry. Thus the name "Lucifer" means: Light-bearer or Light-bringer.

But this is not what the Hebrew word "heylel" means.
The Latin Vulgate translation was (almost) the only version of the Bible in use throughout Europe for 1000 years and Satan popularly became known as Lucifer due to this initial mistranslation.
Later translations decided to continue using "Lucifer" as it was already well known as a name for Satan.

The title "Lucifer" is actually an intended title for Jesus, as is shown in 2 Peter 1:19, which reads:
"...until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts."
This is actually another mistranslation.
"Day star" is translated from the Greek word "phosphoros" which comes from the words "Phos" which means light and the word "phero" which means to bare or carry.
In other words phosphoros and lucifer have an identical meaning.

This is supposed to be regarded to Jesus. But the translators, unwilling to use Lucifer to refer to Jesus thanks to the already common mistranslation, simply took references from elsewhere in the Bible.
The original Latin actually reads: "...donec dies elucescat et lucifer oriatur in cordibus vestris."

The original Heylel is meant to mean bad, boastful, mad, foolish, etc. but the Vulgate translator choose to use the term "Light bearer" to replace the word in reference to Satan. Note, the word Heylel itself does not mean "Satan" it is mearly a descriptive word for various characteristics (both good and bad) that have often been attributed to Satan.

As for Satan as supernatural figure, well there are effectively 2 forms of Satan (adversary) to which man suffers. The personal kind that exists within himself in the form of various temptations, and the angelic type that is sent by God to either challenge men or stop their actions. Note this, that the angelic form of Satan is sent by God, working for God and not as some form of rebel against God.
Christianity has completely skewed this meaning and created Satan into nothing but a boogey man, completely ignoring the self-challenging aspects of the Satan concept and reducing it to a supernatural entity that is outside of man and works against God.
This, along with further translatory confusion regarding Hell and Tartarus, has blended Satan into the modern "Devil" figure that we know today.
In truth, the Satan originally described is nothing like this and is infact a very minor figure in the mythology, certainly never being considered in any way a challenger to God (or even really seeking to do so).

Even in the book of Job, where we see "Satan" committing all sorts of troubles upon Job, Satan is under the direct command of God, who tells him what he can and cant do. This angel is very much a servant to God - but is charged as working as an adversary to man, under Gods command.
We have more direct reference to a fallen angel figure in Ezekiel 2:11-19, which depicts a beautiful cherub, eho lived in Eden but became vain and arrogant. the punishment for this cherub is well described showing that God cast him down and destroyed him, "reducing him to ashes". This verse is spoken in past tense and does not represent any kind of coming punishment of Satan in the end of days. Instead it shows a rideful being who was cast down and destroyed there and then. The point of this verse is not to make any kind of reference to Satan or a supernatural being, but to make a comparison for how a real life king is behaving and the inevitable fate that will paralell.

So we see that "Satan" is not the great supernatural boogy man that Christianity has created, nor is Lucifer a correct name for this imagined being.
Insead the theology support no such entity, but does show the idea that God may send angel as satans (adversaries) against mankind in order to test them. In this, these angels are not evil, but servants of God and should not be considered any more an enemy than one would consider God an enemy.

First off, I'd like to tell you how grateful i am for the knowledge and insight shared through this posting.  Several years ago i experienced a phenomena that really scared the heck out of me - it involved a pentacle - a five pointed star within a circle.  A perfect star within a perfect circle - I had never seen a perfect circle before that day and can attest that it inspired both awe and fear. A few other people witnessed what i did, and were equally startled.  I have not been able to "let go" of what i saw, so bring it up when i feel i can in scholarly or religious circles in order to gain any insight.  I've almost consistently been given "the devil" and "evil" and "withcraft" as synomymous with this symbol.  I have never felt satisified with the connection of a pentacle to evil.  Pythagoras also relied on the same symbol in his teaching regarding mathematics and eternal life. At any rate, thank you so very much for the insight you have provided your readers in relation to this controversial symbol.

Yes, the Pentagram and Pentacle are in no way evil symbols, in fact they are one of the oldest symbols found in religion and mysticism.  It has a genuine mathematical, astronomical and spiritual significance, and is commonly understood to be a very positive symbol.
I'd certainly be interested to know what experience Christine had.
