BEIJING (Aug. 12) - A daily double. Michael Phelps swam into history as the greatet Olympic athlete ever with his 10th and 11th career gold medals - and five world records in five events at the Beijing Games.

With 11 gold medals, Phelps has won more golds than any athlete in history. With three races left in Beijing, Phelps could become the only Olympian to win eight golds in one Olympiad.

Michael Phelps is living strong and healthy!

Let's clone Michael Phelps and add some of his dna to the general population.

Seemingly impervious to fatigue, the 23-year-old American set a blistering pace of 1 minute, 43.31 seconds that got the Americans rolling toward a winning time of 6:58.56 - the first team ever to break the 7-minute barrier.  That's a great reason to clone him.

Can you believe other kids use to pick on Michael Phelps?
His mother is so proud of him!

The Olympic Diet of Michael Phelps

Questions and answers about the high-calorie diet that fuels the Olympic swimmer's championship performance.

Aug. 13, 2008 -- His body may resemble the trim, athletic figure of Michelangelo's statue of David, but the diet of Michael Phelps sure doesn't sound like the stuff of champions.

Tall, dark and handsome, Michael Phelps gets to eat like Dagwood and he's still slim and sexy and strong.  The world's greatest swimmer.  That's a gift from God!!!  Yeah, go Michael, go!  Let's clone Michael Phelps!

The U.S. Olympic swimmer told ESPN that he eats roughly 8,000-10,000 calories a day, including "lots of pizza and pasta." In addition to stuffing down carbs, he's said that he routinely eats foods like fried egg sandwiches.  Wow, that's a lot of food!!!  Yet, he looks trim, slim and very sexy!!!

I was hesitant to put this up because it's so hard to imagine that he could eat 8,000 to 10,000 calories a day!!!

So exactly how do all those calories help fuel the most decorated Olympic athlete in history? Here are some questions and answers about the Michael Phelps diet.

(Photos referenced from: Picsearch.com/pictures/atheletes,%20male/classic%20sports/swimming/michael%20phelps.)

How can Michael Phelps eat 10,000 calories a day and still be so lean?

There is no doubt he packs away a ton of food, but it is unlikely that he actually eats that many calories a day, an expert believes. University of Pittsburgh Director of Sports Nutrition Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, says eating 10,000 calories a day is almost impossible. "To consume 10,000 calories a day, he would need to be eating all day long."

Bonci estimates that to support his 6-foot-4-inch, approximately 190-pound frame, Phelps' rigorous training regime requires roughly 1,000 calories per hour while he is racing or training; she suggests he probably eats closer to 6,000 calories per day.

What does Michael Phelps eat for breakfast?

NBC commentator Bob Costas rattled off Phelps' breakfast menu, which includes three sandwiches of fried eggs, cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions, mayonnaise, an omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast with powdered sugar, and three chocolate-chip pancakes.  Wow ... (Where's the MEAT?)

Without knowing the exact details of the portions, recipes, and ingredients, this meal probably contains roughly 3,000 calories, about half from carbohydrates, a little less than half from fat, and 15% from protein. It's not a bad distribution of major nutrients for competition, according to dietary recommendations, assuming the breads are whole grain, the cheese is low fat, and the fats used to fry the eggs are healthy. The addition of fruit would improve the nutritional profile of this meal, Bonci says.

Is it bad to eat high-fat foods even if you don't gain weight?

Athletes need a diet rich in healthy carbohydrates and fats to provide the necessary energy to compete. "Athletes need fat but, they need to be selective about the type of fat and whenever possible choose unsaturated fats such as olive or canola oil, avocados, nuts, and seeds," says Bonci. Fried and greasy foods are generally not recommended for athletes -- or anyone else.  It seems like you can always trust the "experts" to be wrong!

It seems like the "experts" are often wrong.  The experts say we should not eat any fried foods.  Here is Michael Phelps admittedly showing that he eats at fast food places and he likes fried egg sandwiches.   Perhaps the experts have it wrong.  Maybe it's too much sugar in our diets that isn't right.  Maybe it's eating too much overall that we should avoid.  Maybe it's not enough fiber in the diet.  Maybe it's eating too much meat or fat.  If you look at Michael Phelps breakfast listed earlier in this blog, he ate no meat with his breakfast!

Perhaps instead of eating three meals a day, we should be eating one or two meals a day or balancing all of the above ... based upon our activity level, weight, height and size ... according to how active our lives are and how slim we want to be.

Burger King breakfast: Sourdough Breakfast Sandwich with Bacon,  2 Eggs & Cheese and Sausage.  Michael Phelps likes fried egg sandwiches!  That's good eating ... that's good protein!  Except without the meat!!!

Wouldn't Phelps Feel Bloated During A Race?

Managing food intake is a huge challenge to all athletes to be sure they have enough calories to fuel their event without being bloated. Bonci advises athletes to take advantage of nutrient-dense liquids like smoothies that empty from the stomach more quickly than solid foods. "We encourage athletes to eat foods that are high in calories and small in volume -- so granola with fruit and yogurt would be a better choice than flake cereal with milk." Timing of meals and snacks is an important issue for athletes to help them get the calories and nutrients they need without feeling stuffed and interfering with competition.

If you're not an Olympic athlete, how much should you eat?

Compared to Olympic athletes, most of us need to follow the general guidelines of approximately 2,000 calories per day, adjusted for age, sex, and physical activity levels. The average weekend athlete burns about 200-700 calories an hour running on the treadmill, whereas Phelps probably burns 3,000 calories a day swimming. Most athletes need three to four times as much as the rest of us to keep their bodies strong and energized for competition.

How does Phelps balance eating, sleeping, and recovering so he is ready for the next race?

It is a delicate balancing act, and sometimes Phelps has had only one hour to rest between races. Keeping muscles fueled and ready for record-breaking races requires a regime of eating enough to provide readily available energy, and then resting and repairing the stressed, overworked muscles to prepare for the next race. "Within 15 minutes of finishing a race, Phelps should eat a small meal of two-thirds carbs and one-third protein, with a little healthy fat to start and optimize the recovery process," says Bonci. Recovery is critical to repairing muscles and getting them ready for the next event. Bonci advises athletes to think of recovery as the appetizer -- followed by a meal within an hour or two -- and then rest. She warns that eating too much can interfere with the body's ability to sleep or get a good rest.

Beautiful form, Michael! You look great!

Let's Clone Michael Phelps

Phelps was teased at school for having “ears that stick out” and a gawky expression. His mother recalled that her son “grew unevenly ... it was his ears, then he had very long arms, then he would catch up somewhere else...” For the first time, Phelps talked of the “deep hurt” he felt as a child being teased. His response was telling. He channeled his anger into swimming lessons and later training.

Big ears ... bigger to hear you with.  Long arms ... length and speed, amble and great agility.  He may have looked gawky as a teenager out of the water but in the water ... he is a champion!  Nobody is perfect and why should we take anybody's inventory ... calling them by their faults (gawky, big ears, ugly).  Everybody has faults and nobody is perfect.  Most people who think they are perfect often have some form of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.  Which also explains their cruelty to others.  The only people who will want to take your inventory in a negative way are those who want to debase you, bring you down ... mean spirited people need to mind their own business and look at themselves and take their own inventory and look at where they can make improvements in their own lives.

That ability to convert the negative into a positive is one of the secrets of Phelps’s success. "One of the things I call Michael is the motivation machine,” says Bowman. “Bad moods, good moods, he channels everything for gain. He's motivated by success, he loves to swim fast and when he does that he goes back and trains better. He's motivated by failure, by money, by people saying things about him ... just anything that comes along he turns into a reason to train harder, swim better. Channeling his energy is one of his greatest attributes."

Now, those who teased him ... look at him in wonder ... I bet they wish that they had not mistreated him now!  (Most people make fun of you because they feel insecure within themselves!  I bet they're really feeling insecure now!).  Most of us are tortured and teased as we go to school ... is there any wonder ... nobody likes being abused!

I have often been baffled by why some kids pick on and hate other kids.  It often ties in with the environment.  Where adults are not trying to keep control or peace of a situation, it often reigns out of control.  I have also noticed that if your in a dysfunctional environment, it breeds violence.  It's sad to say that our schools are often being run like prisons and are very dysfunctional ... is there any wonder why so many kids are angry, fighting with each other and harassing and picking on other kids too.  The teachers are often part of the abuse cycle at schools due to mismanagement and that's why parents must step in, watch what's going on and demand appropriate change.  Zero bullying.  No harassment by teachers or students.

Bowman discovered hidden depths to Phelps early on. "He's had the same mental approach since he was very young. There is nothing on his mind. He's able to block everything out," says the coach. A symptom perhaps of the need to bottle-up, to block out, both in what has been at times a troubled home and in the midst of a regime that many would faint away at the very thought of: Phelps covers more than 100km in water a week during the hardest times, seven days a week, including Christmas Day.  Wow, that's commitment!

Michael Phelps, Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak with their gold medals after winning the men's 4x100m freestyle relay swimming final.  Congratulations guys, you all did a great job representing the USA!

Michael or Micha'el is a name that comes from the Hebrew: מִיכָאֵל / מיכאל‎ (mee-KHA-el), meaning "Who is like God?"  In English, it is sometimes shortened to Mike, Mikey.  Who is like God ... Michael Phelps ... I can see God in him.

Michael will probably marry two or three times.  That's a probability not an absolute.  Several marriages doesn't have to happen.  The women will most certainly be after him now that he has fame and fortune.  Michael is most likely to marry a woman who will have the letters "HA" somewhere in her name.  This will be his best chance for happiness.  These letters can show up any where in her name ... first, middle or last name.  Blonde hair, light eyes, either blue or green.  A very attractive woman both times that the question of marriage comes up ... this is the type of woman he will most likely marry.

Phelps last name, represent success or popularity.  Noting that this individual would find himself before the general public in either, television, radio or the printed press which suggest fame.  His last name also suggest that money will follow him all of his life as well as notoriety (some level of fame ... he could end up having his own tv show or radio show).  Not bad for a boy who use to be teased for having large ears and being a bit gawky looking.

Most of us go through some awkward years ... oh, if we could only keep the faith and see that the angels have a plan for us in our gawky lives.

(Photos referenced from: Picsearch.com/pictures/atheletes,%20male/classic%20sports/swimming/michael%20phelps.)

Phelps also means someone who loves animals, horses, specifically.

If we were all smart, we would look at how God is blessing Michael Phelps.  When Michael Phelps is challenged ... he works harder.  He perfects his skills and his gifts.  God blessed him for his obedience to doing what is right!  We could all learn from his example and work harder at our own gifts in our own lives and not give in to defeat, fear, depression, stress or worry.  God gave us all talents to be used and developed!  What are you good at?  What can you work to improve?

It is my prayer that Michael Phelps will use his success wisely and not fall into any evil traps by people who want to spitefully use him.  I especially would like to see him have real love in his life and not just people who want to take advantage of his fame and fortune.
