The Presidency ... It's An Ego Trip
| Noun |
1. |
ego trip - an act undertaken to increase your own power and influence or to draw attention to your own importance:
self-aggrandisement, self-aggrandizement
aggrandisement, aggrandizement, elevation - the act of increasing the wealth or prestige or power or scope of something; "the aggrandizement of the king"; "his elevation to cardinal" |
It is frightening to think that the Presidency of the United States is an ego trip. Everyone who has ever held office ... has gone on an ego trip ... to one extent or the other.
The presidential candidates all lie and they make a lot of promises. Doing their research and telling the people what they want to hear. The sad truth of it is that big money makes our government go round and round. The presidential candidates say that they are on the people's side but they end up being elected, forgetting most of their promises and selling out to the highest bidder. President Bush said if he was running for President today, he would also be saying that things needed to change and that he was the candidate to bring about change. Tell the people what they want to hear, then once your in office, go on your ego trip and do whatever you desire.

It must be intoxicating. All that power. They say absolute power, corrupts, absolutely! Maybe we should have better presidential laws that keep the presidents in check, such as, the presidents cannot give away the American workers jobs to overseas companies! Any company found to be closing shop in America and opening up shop in third world countries will not be allowed to do business in America. Or, how about this one ... In order to protect the health of the general public against national and international pandemics, governments must offer a national health plan for everyone.
Just a little compassion for the common good. A little justice for the general public.
Offering a national health care program is only intelligent to keep society clean and free of various illnesses and diseases and to control pandemics. Allowing illnesses and diseases to grow among the poor and letting it kill them off will not eliminate the problem, it will allow the problem to spread across America, across races and across socio-economic lines. Because the new diseases will be ... in the air!!! There will be another pandemic.
The 1918 influenza pandemic killed more people in 26 weeks than the AIDS epidemic has killed in 26 years. According to Nobel laureate F. Macfarlane Burnett who studied the pandemic, the worldwide death toll was between 50 and 100 million people. If those 1918 figures were adjusted for today's global population, the numbers would be 175 to 325 million. But this was not the only lethal flu pandemic suffered by mankind. In all, 31 have been documented.
Is the United States prepared to face another pandemic like the Great Influenza of 1918? Another pandemic is coming. It's not a question of if ... only when! That's why a national healthcare plan for everyone is so important!
It's a sad game and the biggest losers is the general public, the working class, the poor, the disabled, those who really need help and can't get it because the elected officials in the government are playing politics.
To really bring control over our elected officials and the government, I guess we should all pray that the right person be elected and a right and just government be effective in the improvement of the United States and it's citizens lives. We should pray for this constantly and without ceasing. America is for sale to the highest bidder. This is the result of too much capitalism! If it's not profitable, don't do it. If the elderly patient in the hospital cannot pay, put her out on the streets. That is shameful capitalism, where they write people off. The government system is corrupt and the people are corrupt and so how can they do what's right when special interest and the highest bidder is buying the government and coercing it to do their bidding. Our system is broken and they don't want to fix it.
However, we the people can.
We the people ...
of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
(The Constitution of the United States of America)
We must speak up for ourselves when we know that our fellow citizens are dying in the streets and being abandoned by the government. People who need the most help in the worst way. We, as a people, will all be condemned. We will either live together or we will die together.
If an influenza pandemic struck today, borders would close, the global economy would shut down, international vaccine supplies and health-care systems would be overwhelmed, and panic would reign. To limit the fallout, the industrialized world must create a detailed response strategy involving the public and private sectors.

Dating back to antiquity, influenza pandemics have posed the greatest threat of a worldwide calamity caused by infectious disease. Over the past 300 years, ten influenza pandemics have occurred among humans. The most recent came in 1957-58 and 1968-69, and although several tens of thousands of Americans died in each one, these were considered mild compared to others. The 1918-19 pandemic was not. According to recent analysis, it killed 50 to 100 million people globally. Today, with a population of 6.5 billion, more than three times that of 1918, even a "mild" pandemic could kill many millions of people. Imagine those affected not having healthcare ... it spells destruction.

A number of recent events and factors have significantly heightened concern that a specific near-term pandemic may be imminent. It could be caused by H5N1, the avian influenza strain currently circulating in Asia. At this juncture scientists cannot be certain. Nor can they know exactly when a pandemic will hit, or whether it will rival the experience of 1918-19 or be more muted like 1957-58 and 1968-69. The reality of a coming pandemic, however, cannot be avoided. Only its impact can be lessened. Some important preparatory efforts are under way, but much more needs to be done by leaders controlling the government at many levels of society to protect the general public!
So, whether we like it or not ... we are our brother's keepers.

"When you're finally, up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you're going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why can't we just learn to live together like decent people?"
