Evidently she’s back in jail, which must have really screwed up the plans for the big “coming out” party planned to celebrate her early release. Debutantes normally get only one coming-out party, when they enter society. Since this was different type of celebration, maybe no one checked with Miss Manners or Emily Post. Or maybe the judge did.

It’s amazing the amount of press and buzz Paris Hilton’s sentence has generated. It’s really made people focus on the state of American jurisprudence, don’t you think? How about all of the people who’ve served years on Death Row for crimes they didn’t commit? Many of them have been freed thanks to advances in forensic science and the Innocence Project. So far, they haven’t gotten much press. The discussion of real injustice is much too complex to fit neatly into a 10-second sound bite, and it’s not nearly as much fun to belabor endlessly since these people don’t have publicists, personal assistants or designer wardrobes.

Or maybe their only crime is that they’re not photogenic enough or rich enough to become Idols on the altar of the Cult of Celebrity. I’m turning off my radio and TV. Wait – maybe I’ll just switch from the news programs and see if E! is re-running episodes of The Simple Life.

Love and peace,

Dona
