Boundaries

How to keep healthy boundaries in your relationships

EAT This, NOT That.......

I got a new book recently, after I saw it on Ellen, It's called Eat THIS, Not THAT, by David Zinczenko and Matt Goulding both who work for Mens Health Magazine. It gives details of some menu items that are shocking, talk about weapons of Mass destruction!!!

It gives suggestions as to what you should have in many restaurants, rather than some of the menu items that would send your daily fat grams way over. Suggestions for the drive through, for example the Whopper with Cheese is 760 calories, and has 47g of fat. And a big Mac is 540 calories, and 29g of Fat. Quite a difference and I would have thought the Whopper was more calories and more grams of fat.......

It recommends drinks, Capri sun has 26g of sugar and 100 calories, and there are better choices for your child. And it's got suggestions for bread, butter and all kinds of healthier choices you can make that are not diet but simply better choices for healthy living. I highly recommend it.

You know, they can preach eating healthy until the cows come home, (pardon the cliche) but in the end people will eat what they like because it tastes good.

The problem is too many people eat out too often.  When I was a kid most mothers stayed at home and cooked for their families. And when I was a kid a fast food dinner was considered a treat.  We rarely had it.  Most of the time if we had hamburgers for dinner Dad cooked them outside on the grill.  And back then obesity, especially childhood obesity, was rare.  Coincidence?  I think not.

For whatever reasons, good or bad, it seems that too many mothers don't want to cook for their children anymore. They prefer to stop at KFC or McDonalds every night and grab something to go.  So we now have a younger generation with a real taste for fast food, which is high in fat, high in cholesterol, high in sugar, high in salt and high in calories. No wonder we have so many fat kids and/or kids with dangerously high cholesterol. These are serious health issues that will haunt them the rest of their lives.

Cooking isn't that hard, folks.  In fact, it can be a lot of fun.  There is a plethora of cookbooks out there filled with recipes that are healthy, taste delicious, and are quick and easy to prepare.  But until people realize this and go back to preparing their own meals at home, where they can control what they eat, we will continue to have an obesity epidemic, and will we have another generation of fat, unhealthy kids.

My thought for the day.

I eat out rarely and I love to cook for my children, my daughter helps me daily and we all love fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and eat them daily. The increase of high frustose corn syrup in ALL foods also cannot be good for people, why do we need sugar in BREAD??

Dear Joan:

I tend to agree with Marina about people getting lazy and not cooking for their kids.  I see the "fast food" epidemic spreading not decreasing.  Our best times of the day with the kids was around the dinner table talking over our day.  I have always cooked from scratch and I did not allow my kids to eat at fast food places but as they got older and moved away to College and into their own lives guess what?  They became fast food addicts anyway.  They are slowly learning how bad that is for their health but when you deny someone something then they seem to want it more.  I think your suggestion Joan about finding what to eat when you are out and about and what is halfway good for you is something that would be worthwhile.  I will get the book for my son!!!  Blessings to you and thanks for sharing with us Joan.

The Kids have fast food once every two weeks and they both loved this book and make better choices with their dad out for their twice monthly fast food dinners.

I think Joan is on to something too about all the fructose being added to our food.  For awhile there I was going out with a fellow who is a diabetic, and he really taught me how to look at food labels.  I was blown away.  I've always had a preference for low fat/fat free food, but he really made me aware of just how much sugar can be packed away in our food without our knowing it.

While I was going out with him I ordered a couple of diabetic cookbooks on Amazon.  WOW!  The recipes are delicious, easy to prepare, and good for everyone, even if you are not a diabetic.  I dropped several pounds without even trying.

Apparently the high fructose corn syrup added to foods (ALL kinds of food) does not allow the person to tell if they are full or not. I know I heard that but again for the life of me cannot remember where I heard it but it makes sense. That obviously makes a big difference, I go to Europe a lot and the difference in the soda, is unbelievable, way too much sugar in the soda here in the U.S it's undrinkable in my humble here, and while I am not a soda drinker and neither are my children, its way too sweet here.
