How to keep healthy boundaries in your relationships

Losses of Freedom............
I am beside myself.......
I read all about the child in Colorado who had the anti-Obama t-shirt which I felt was inappropriate in a school setting aside from the civil rights issue...
But today I felt my own civil rights were violated......Apparently I was WRONG.
I went to a local bank to cash a check that was a re-payment for concert tickets I had charged for a friend for a few of us to go to a concert and I was just going to cash that check instead of depositing it so I went to the bank it was drawn upon rather than putting it into my own bank.
I handed over my driving license as my identification and was SHOCKED when I was asked for my fingerprint....
I asked the teller if she could repeat herself?
I was astounded, and even more astounded to find out that it is LEGAL for a bank to ask for that kind of verification IF you do not hold an account with that banking institution...
Mr Bush at it again taking away your rights as a citizen apparently the Patriot Act gives a banking institution to seek that kind of identification to prevent money laundering...for terrorists....
Now bear in mind this was a check for less than $100 so the only laundering I could have done was a few loads..............I suppose you could throw in the detergent :-)
Are all of your rights going to be taken away in the name of fighting terrorism?
I for one am incensed.......
and in shock......
Finger prints to cash a check? Just cause you do not have an account in that bank? Even if you have a credit card from that bank? Come ON, that's pushing it...in my humble....
Needless to say that check was DEPOSITED, in my own bank account,  there aint NO one getting my finger prints except God Forbid.........the police and considering they do not have them so far...I will not be giving them a reason for taking them either........
My dad was a police man in Ireland and I am a law abiding woman :-)

The lunatics are running the asylum. Every time I post a parcel to an international destination I am required to provide proof of my identity. Now, let's face it, any self respecting terrorist would have fake ID. It is making the honest people jump through hoops instead of targetting the real causes of the problem. No way would a bank get my fingerprints! I won't even give out my home phone number, just my mobile. Where is this lunacy going to end?

I do have to admit I was shocked when I was asked, I made a few phone calls and apparently in some states that's been the norm for a while, and to be honest, I know all about Guantanamo Bay, the whole presumed guilty type thing going on but a finger print to cash a check?
That's INSANE........
When indeed will it end........or more importantly WHERE ??

I also believe more and more of our rights are being taken away.
But having said that, I can tell you that the fingerprint thing--it's actually protection, of a sort.
There is so much fraud going on these days.  Due to the wonderful age of computers (which I am not complaining about since it's the major source of news I get and the best way for me to keep in touch with family and friends (which is another topic altogether! lol)...

but....due to the wonderful age of computers, banks (ie: the public) are losing millions of dollars every day due to people having the ability to make their own checks and then go to a financial institution and cash them.

Not only that, I could steal your checks, or your companies checks, and have myself a nice lil shopping spree!! The only way the courts will prosecute, IF they can find the perpetrator, is by fingerprint identification--it's the only way the bank/the courts can actually say, 100%, that the person who cashed the check is the same person who presented the ID....

Most small time (ie: local) criminals cash worthless / fraudulent checks for less than a couple hundred dollars and go to several different places a day to do it.  Large amounts cause people to sit up and take notice whereas small amounts do not...so the criminals are able to get away with a LOT of money once you realize the same person is cashing anywhere from 4 to 9 checks a day, several days in a row, before moving on to another identity or another business...

It's ridiculous, I know, but it's actually a very small "bite out of crime" to be able to catch someone who is committing fraud...

I'd say more, but it would take up entirely to much space, lol.  Just know the fingerprint thing--it's a way to fight crime.  And because our courts are so liberal these days, you practically have to have fingerprint, picture, and nose print of someone to be able to get a guilty verdict...

Oh Yes Joan you do that here in good ol' Florida if you cash a check without being an actual acct holder of that bank.
They also charge you 2$ as well to cash a check. How about this, they put a hold on a check for 10 days if not drawn on their bank..10 days for your friggen money. Your money!! It takes 10 days to verify a comapny check. Also, the bank has a right to decide whether or not they will keep you as a customer, they can terminate you if they decide.
I found that out by disputing a issue and because I pushed it to the "upper office" the man I spoke with was having a horrid day and was in no mood to deal with me, and said to me " I am just going to terminate your account". Now you tell me what rights? I closed the acct immediately when I found out that yes, the bank can do that at their own discretion. So if someone is pissed off they can do what ever they want to.
Whats that insanity is when you keep trying to do the same thing over and over the same way and coming up with the same results.
Time for a Change for the people!

I for one am NOT willing to have my finger print on a check to verify my identity to ANY bank, as far as I am concerned it is a violation of my privacy, if the banks cannot verify their own checks then THEY are the ones with a problem, this is not supposed to be a police state but a democracy....
George Orwell was not far off in his scary novel 1984...
There is ONE bank that I will NOT do business with again, I am paying off my credit card this month and CLOSING that account...their practices are invasive of the rights of a person supposedly living in a democracy...

When I was living in PA several years ago, I went to MY bank to deposit a check I had received from someone out of state.  I don't recall exactly if it was my Uncle in FL or my Aunt in TN. As I've always done my banking via ATM, the tellers were not familiar with me, so when I went inside to do this transaction I was asked to provide:  my driver's license, a SECOND form of picture ID, my Social Security card, and my bank card.  I asked for the Manager whom explained it to me as if, like you, I was laundering money for the Organization, Jimmy Hoffa, or some other shady character.  I asked why a second form and what if I didn't have it to give?  The answer.....my fingerprint. It is common practice to use fingerprints with account holders that cannot sign their name or aren ot citizens of the US.  Now, my prints are registered with NCIC so I come upon the databank...no record, just that I'm registered. Like you, I was livid to the point where I closed my account and went to the bank I was with since I was a child.
I hate to always say it's because of 9-11 and enacting the Patriot Act, but in your case that's the real reason.  I don't like it; I don't agree with it; and will not support it in any way, shape or form.  The sad reality is the President has absolute power should he feel/deem it necessary.  Some Democracy, huh?

The one thing that bothers me about that is the government now knows more about your money, where it goes, where it comes from etc but to have more of our freedoms taken away in the name of protection from terrorism is not something I am in favor of. Now bear in mind this was a check for less than $100 that was re-payment for concert tickets I had purchased for someone.
Those men who committed those crimes on 9/11 have a lot to answer for. They have given this country an excuse to slowly erode our hard earned freedoms that are associated with a democracy while this country is supposedly bestowing that same supposed democracy onto other countries whether they want it or not. I do not want my freedoms taken away in the name of fighting terrorism....Some I am willing to tolerate but certainly not all...
I am almost amused by the irony of it...but not quite..

Joan, you are so correct.  Each and every time you swipe your debit card at the grocery store, department store, gas pump, etc, the Government takes a "poll" of what the average consumers purchase, consume, wear, etc.  They can caluclate what you spend each day; week; month; year in order to make predictions of consumer spending.  I'm of the school my Father reared us on:  if you do not have the cold, hard cash to buy it, you don't need it!  I'm with you....amused, but not quite amused!

To me having to use the store card to save money is a way for the store to keep track of your grocery habits, does that mean the health insurance company can refuse to pay a medical claim because they can prove you did not eat healthy?
Is that cancer risk test a way for an insurance company to refuse coverage based upon your risk?
Do your opinions work against you so that you will be kept on a *list*?
Where does this end?
It's all kinda scary if you ask me...
Big brother is indeed watching and keeping very close track...

Thats why many people need to start breaking free from "old habits" and not partake in them anymore. The Buck does not end as long as people participate and playing the game. Use your cash vs your cards. Keep more cash on you or in your own possession. Things are not what they use to be. Your right in saying Joan, Health csre as well, because they look at the history and hold judgements and make decisions. Yet, you pay for the insurance???huh?? Trends need to break and when they do than what will happen is people take back their own Identity. Stop playing as much as you can, maybe not all at once..but little by little pull back.. Cheryl your dad a wise man, if you do not have the cash on hand do you really have to have it???? I bet not!!
Up in Arms is what we are, and we do not have to continue to walk in anyone elses shoes..

I watch the BBC America news and they did a piece on France and how they have not been affected by this credit crisis because of the why they run the mortgage industry there ( 20% down and strict enforcement of the percentage of the salary regarding the mortgage) and credit cards are more like debit cards, ONLY if you have the money can you purchase, it used to be like that in Ireland but there too people used their homes as piggy banks...

I really feel not out of "fear" out of my own truth, not a bad idea to have a good amount of money socked away with you. What if everything shuts down, no checks, not credit cards, what would you do? Not to say this in fear but- a reality. No matter if you have a Gold credit line, unable to access. I many times do not have big amounts of cash around, I usually have most of it in the bank and use my check card or credit card. Live by plastic, I have felt this way for awhile to make this change from plastic to cash more.

We all go through times when we use credit over cash, I go back and forth and only use my cards when it's for an airline ticket, car rental on vacation, or when its necessary cause it's on line or something like that.
