5 Reasons Why All Free Psychic Readings Are Scams

"Free readings are scams," my small business advisor said, with neither contempt nor question in his voice. Like me, he's given to the dramatic side of truth. Just last week he told me that when a client doesn't show for an appointment, it is just like he or she is shop-lifting from me. The idea that all free readings are scams seems drastic, and immediately causes one to think of examples to the contrary. The only readings I've had myself in which money, goods or services hasn't directly changed hands were Family, which requires an intangible payment from my life. Could I devote proper energy to a truly free reading, I pondered?  No way!  There is no altruism in a reader who works for free, because he or she then neglects and disrespects paying clients. All good readers with positive intentions are either quickly burned out or regularly booked up by loyal paying clients, leaving only those with other motives with time for free readings  All free readings are, indeed, scams.

  1. Hobby readers, though well-meaning, are not professionals, and are interested in you more as a guinea pig science experiment than a person. Guiding your life by somebody reading a tarot interpretation book more than your life can be dangerous. There's a certain learning curve that happens over the years of readings, and every reader has some serious mistakes, especially in the beginning. Do you want to be one? All free readings are scams.
  2. If you don't have enough money to pay an affordable professional reader, you probably have other ways you should be spending your time and effort. You may be desperately trying to distract yourself or procrastinate, or think that you're just using somebody with a kind heart that you'll never see again. But, the old saying is true, you're just cheating and robbing yourself. Invest your energy to serve your more immediate needs more directly. All free readings are scams.
  3. Asking for a free reading for "proof" that the psychic is "real" is not the right way to start an honest business relationship, and will rightfully cause real psychics to blow you off. If you asked a doctor or a financial planner to give you their services for free and then maybe... Just maybe... You will use them again as a paying customer in the future, it would not go over well. A "real" psychic has references. Those who don't have real references are willing to shoot in the dark with free reading scams in hopes to hook you into something else or just because they're ineffective. All free readings are scams.
  4. A qualified and skillful psychic will already be successfully busy and, at best, may laugh at you and your request for a freebie. A psychic who is not serving happy clients and instead has all the time in the world to attempt a free reading may be manipulating people into something they don't want. The longer a psychic spends grooming you before getting his or her money, the quickly you should run the other way. All free readings are scams.
  5. If you fully intend to pay, but want a little something "first," do you really want to waste your time and effort listening to an extended sales pitch, entertaining an incompetent, letting a crook gather information about your personal life by guessing or chasing off all the good readers in town who are avoiding you to better serve their paying clients? Or would you prefer to get started on a life-long business relationship that is based on mutual respect? Here-today-gone-tomorrow free readers rob you of that. All free readings are scams.

Nearly every day, a person is scammed by a so-called psychic, the most common scam beginning with a free cold reading that just happened to land on some truth through random happenstance. After being convinced, the victim is then held with emotional blackmail or threats until vast sums are paid for spell-work, money-cleansing or healing, after which the psychic which was never heard of before disappears into the night, never to be heard from again. If you think you're too smart to fall for such a scam, think again, as many educated and wise people have been targeted. Don't be so greedy as to place the power over your life entirely in another for free. Instead, hold the power in your business relationship by placing your money and your trust in a qualified professional who is too busy and successful to play games. My small business advisor told me to warn you:  All free readings are scams.

# re: 5 Reasons Why All Free Readings Are Scams

I realize there are many people in life who thrive on exploiting others by using the word "free" to draw in new business, but on this one I have to disagree. Not all Readers, Healthcare Workers, Lawyers or (for that matter) Indian Chiefs are gigolos as this belief system subliminally suggests.

Yes, one does have to earn a living to pay the bills. And No, one does not have put a dollar sign on every gesture of kindness to demonstrate an act of authenticity in a fellow human being during a time of confusion, desperation and need.

I am sure your "mentor" means well and that this concept is not all about revenue standing by itself. However, what makes you think she/he has perceived this perception of reality in the correct context to begin with?

I left room in my explanation of risk to clients for readers who accept things other than dollar signs and for readers without criminal intent. The scope of this essay is more about protecting clients than defending readers, which is what rang true to me.

I am not trying to change your adoption of this embedded concept (nor the definition assigned to the word scam) but rather just giving you some input as to programming aspect behind the influences creating the world in which we live.

All I am saying is that not everyone fits this mold. Make no mistake. There are just as many scam artists floating around with credentials as there are opportunists seeking entitlement in the world. (For example, do you think world politics run off the uneducated or the inexperienced individual? One only needs to look at the state of the economy to understand the dangers in this blind concept being ingrained.)

No doubt differences can be argued both ends, but unfortunately the facts don’t change.  But then Keen isn’t my livelihood.

Semantics is also beyond the scope of this particular article, with the intent not to analyse all possible reader motivations but to warn clients of risks. "You get what you pay for" can, should and does get ingrained.

Hi,

Interesting article. You make a good point that it doesn't serve the reader or client for the reader to work for free.

As a reader, I can't say I agree totally with it being a scam though. I used to do readings for free in the beginning. For my training, I had five practice clients and everything was checked with a pendulum.

Those people sent me plenty of referrals and my business went from there. But I don't think it's fair to say that those practice clients got scammed.

Ah, your clients were victim of the first of the five "scams" I listed!  Though that "scam" does not have criminal intent, it is not something I'd recommend clients to seek out. Those clients could have been served better by a more skilled professional, like you are now today.
