Beltane in Bakersfield, CA
__________
Dear Beltane,
You may have already read some of the history in books or on-line. Beltane is a springtime celebration of the union between the Goddess and the God. It is also a celebration of the sun God Belinos, and the name Beltane means "Fire of Bel". Women can braid flowers into their hair to celebrate the day. Men and women can decorate their bodies to rejoice in the season! There are many ways to celebrate this joyous occasion. Rituals are often done with a Beltane bonfire. Some people choose this day to get married or handfasted. A traditional celebration is to dance around a maypole tied with red and white ribbons to symbolize the sexual union between Goddess and God. The maypole is my favourite Beltane celebration, especially when you get so many people involved that you end up tangled and laughing! I also enjoy any excuse to settle around a bonfire at night with old friends and new!
Light!
Alexandra
