Ask A Witch: Hurt Gay Man in Tucson, AZ
Dear Alexandra,
I am a self-taught, practicing Wiccan; however, there are many in the community who think that being gay cannot create no magic due to polarity issues-involved in ritual crafting, respectively. Yet as a gay man,I have found that we have this polarity within us, gay folks, as our other brothers and sisters need to evoke both separately. What is your view on this? Is this the same type of theological bigotry that we see in other faiths?
Very Respectfully,

Dear HGM,
As you requested, I'm now going to plunge into the realm of personal opinion, so what I write here probably does not reflect the views of the greater Pagan community! I believe that polarity is a very important part of magic and worship. Therefore, I could not see myself practicing certain traditions, for example Dianic Wicca, which often choose to venerate only one gender. If it were my circle that I were running, I would have
males and females paired symbolically as working partners even if they were gay outside of the ritual context. However, before you feel any more hurt, I want to make it clear that I believe that polarity can be achieved, to some extent, even in a group of only men or only women! Though there would be some limitations here in a religion based on fertility, as magical children of the Gods and Goddesses, I believe that we all have masculine and feminine energies within us. In order for these energies to flow from man to women and woman to man in a circle or in greater humanity, we must first feel this in our hearts. This is where it begins in everyone, regardless of gender or sexual preference.
Light!
Alexandra
