Ask A Witch: Making Decisions in St. Paul, MN

Dear Alexandra

My family is Christian. I still go to church with them, but I don't believe in their religion, because I'm Wiccan. They know that I don't agree with their beliefs, but they still want me to be a Christian. Conformation is coming up and I am supposed to state my beliefs in the Christian religion. But, obviously, this cause a problem because I don't believe in it. What do I do? I don't want to let down my family, but I don't believe in this. I know the correct answer is to say that I don't want to be confirmed but it is so hard because I won't just be letting down my parents but other relatives who want to come see me confirmed.

Dear MD,

Of course I am going to tell you to say that you don't want to be confirmed. If you did get confirmed, I'm sure you wouldn't be the first non-believer, and you wouldn't be the last. But, If you allow yourself to be confirmed, you may still feel like you're secretly "letting them down" as you put it, and you will also be lying to some very important people in your life. If you were not so close with them spiritually, that would be one thing, but it sounds like you've gone pretty far into a process you don't agree with. If you cannot find pride in others, find it within yourself, and do the right thing.

Light!
