Ask A Witch: Scared in Boston, MA
Dear Alexandra,
I have been a Wiccan for as long as I can remember. It is in my family. But anyway, lately I've been seeing things... disturbing things. It is not so much blood and gore but it's more heartache and hurt. It scares me to death because I'm in the middle of it. I'm at a terrible time in my life and I might loose my uncle in the war. I'm searching for my father and I've been diagnosed with so many "problems" that I think I'm going to go out of my mind. I really don't want to go to my psychiatrist for help because these images are deeper than that. I hope negative energy will not take over my body. I've done tons of protection spells for myself but I believe something is after me. I honestly don't know what to do and I hope I can get help before it drives me to insanity.

Dear Scared,
I'd like to encourage you to bring up these visions with your psychiatrist. Even if these visions are deeper than a "problem," they are still most obviously a "problem," and you'll have to rule out the physical and mental sides of it before you can get at the spiritual. Your psychiatrist knows you, and may be able to help you and come up with some coping mechanisms for dealing with such experiences. In addition to this, I suggest that you investigate Grounding techniques, such as those included in the book "The Spiral Dance" by Starhawk. Grounding excess energy may solve part of the problem, as will working to reduce your stress level during this trying time in your life.
