Dear Alexandra,
Hi there, I'm a 32 year old woman who suffers from depression. I
live at home with my parents and one of my siblings who is married
with a baby on the way. Now I feel totally smothered my my mum who is
very controlling. I feel totally weak and can never make it on my own
out there. She makes me feel totally smothered to the point that I can
not breathe or even have a life. She is so controlling that I do not
even have any friends as her energy is so strong she doesn't even let
me trust anyone to have any friends. Its like she wants me to be no
hope and she doesn’t want me to be happy. My parents are not very
supportive people and don't want or let us be strong and independent.
I feel like its too late for me to change as I have become like them.
Please help me with the truth. I don't even have a boyfriend as my
days consist of constantly cleansing myself of her energy... Please
help!

Make sure that you're managing your depression effectively. Though it
feels to you like your mother is an external force keeping you from
happiness, there are internal coping skills and resources that can
help you rediscover your own strength! Before you can re-establish
healthy relationships with your mother, friends and a boyfriend,
you'll need break this negative pattern by to loving yourself.
