Ask A Witch: Theresa in Baltimore, ML
Dear Alexandra...
My mother has not been able to sleep through the night in over two years. She barely sleeps two hours at a time. She's been to doctors but all they ever do is throw anti-depressants and sleeping drugs at her and they are not working. So far there hasn't been any medical excuses either. I've been suggesting researching vitamins, maybe B-12, taking walks or possibly taking up Yoga, but I really have no knowledge at all. She says she's not having nightmares but has admitted to feeling really anxious before falling asleep. Any advise on where to look for her problem?

Dear Theresa,
Your suggestions are good, but if you have exhausted physical explanation, your mother may also need to seek therapy for psychological or emotional reasons for her sleep problems. There are many therapeutic treatments available for such anxiety. Once she has done that, she can also make sure to get regular exercise, but not right before bed time, and to keep a very regular schedule to wind down slowly before bed. What works for me is to drink herbal tea and take Valerian root, but make sure to run that and the B-12 by her doctor or pharmacist to make sure that it doesn't conflict with her medications.
Light!
