Ask A Witch: Witch Cousin Gone Astray in Washington, DC

Dear Alexandra,

I have a cousin who is interested in learning Wicca. She has just turned 18. However, I am not comfortable in doing so since her parents are against it and they are very controlling. She has been studying with someone for some time. But when I ask her about it she doesn't even know the basic information, such as what the Sabbats are, the Rede or anything else that is the foundation of the Wiccan religion. Then, once, when I was out with her we ran into this person who was supposedly teaching her. He said some things that raised red flags for me. Such as that he had cast a spell on her family because he felt they didn't treat her right. Also, he said that, if we have the power, why not smack back at people. This has me very concerned and I'm not sure what I should do. Thanks and blessings.

Dear WCGA,

You have some very valid concerns, there. However, here's where things can get painful. Your cousin is an adult, and she has the right to make her own mistakes.  So, though you can call the police to file a report that her teacher threatened her family, and you can tell her how you feel, you can't force her to stop pursuing this. You can, however, do all you can with the power of your love and the respect that she has for you. Discuss your concerns with her openly and sincerely, but don't use accusations that arouse defensiveness and stubbornness, even if it is obvious. Instead, share with her ways that she can ease your concerns. Perhaps suggest books for her to read, or a local learning group for her to attend. If you are gentle enough that she is open to other resources, it will become clear to her which one is the phony when she sees the whole picture.

Light!
Alexandra
