Ask a Witch: Wiccan in LIttle Rock, AR
Dear Alexandra,
What does the five-pointed star mean?
Wiccan in Little Rock, AR
__________
Dear Wiccan,
The five-pointed star is often called the pentagram. Though, like all symbols, its meaning changes over time and culture, it is commonly viewed in the Pagan community as representing five spiritual essences. Four of them being the "elements" of Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The topmost point representing Spirit. Together they might mean, "mind over matter." When surrounded by a circle, the symbol becomes the pentacle, used in some circles as a representative of Earth, and its meaning takes on a protective connotation. Other groups, such as Satanists, adopted the upside-down or "inversed" pentagram as their symbol. When turned on its head, the pentagram might mean "matter over mind."
Light!
Alexandra
