8 Things No-One Tells You About Getting Married

  1. Stage fright: If you are naturally shy, getting married won’t change that. If anything, being the centre of attention will make it worse. Expect the best but take sensible steps to prepare for the worst. Make sure others are ready to step in to support you if you freeze or break out in a rash.
  2. Parents have rights: It may be your Big Day, but if your parents are paying for it, then they will expect their opinions to be listened to. If you want to run everything your way, then best pay for it yourselves.
  3. Wedding nights aren’t all they are cracked up to be: Your new spouse may have drunk too much, the bride’s hair is usually a disaster area and you’ll both be tired and wrung out. Sometimes it’s better to have a cuddle, get some sleep, and wait until morning to enjoy some fireworks.
  4. Families fight: in these days of fractured families, all sorts of tensions can erupt at weddings. If your family is a ticking time bomb, you might be better to have a quiet private ceremony in an exotic location and invite everyone to a celebration later, where it won’t matter so much if fights break out. It may ruffle a few feathers, but it’s better than ending up on the evening news because your wedding day turned into a riot.
  5. You WILL blow your budget: There are all sorts of hidden expenses involved (like paying the celebrant!) and dream dresses always cost a lot more than you expect. If you are short of funds you may need to re think your plans and choose something more modest and less stressful, so you enjoy your day. Getting married is the important thing. You can always compensate later with great anniversaries.
  6. Not everyone you invite will make it: It can be upsetting when someone special doesn’t turn up, but don’t let it spoil your day. A wedding day is no different to any other occasion – not everyone who is invited will be able to attend. Don’t take it personally.
  7. The wedding party can be a headache: bridesmaids complain about their dresses, flower girls throw up, your groomsmen won’t get serious. Not everyone will be on their best behaviour just because you want them to be. You may need your sense of humour. Don’t let them get to you!
  8. Men cry too: Everyone expects women to cry, but many a groom has burst into tears. Make sure the men folk have hankies!

The perfect day is generally achieved by not trying too hard to make things perfect….
