A few weeks ago I watched a medical documentary about some morbidly obese patients and the efforts their doctors were making to save them, because their own weight was killing them. As I looked at what those people were putting into their mouths, it occurred to me that most of what they were eating was brown. They were consuming fried chicken, chips, steaks, burgers, cake and cookies, and all sorts of other foods that lacked much trace of green, red or any of the other colors we associate with healthy foods.

When these patients were admitted to hospital (sometimes after breaking down walls to get them out) the first thing that the doctors had to do was to feed them, because they were chronically malnourished. They were huge – but they were vitamin and mineral deficient because of the limited diets they had been on. Brown may be a great colour for fabrics, but it’s not so good when it comes to food!

If you are struggling with excess weight, give some thought to the fact that you may actually be malnourished. Your body may be calling out for food because you keep giving it the wrong things. Add some colour to your diet. Avoid the browns and eat your greens, yellows, purples and reds instead. Colour is an excellent guide to what’s best for you.
