We all have down days. The trick is knowing how to cope with them, so they don’t become over whelming. Paradoxically, it’s when you’re feeling good that it’s time to set aside resources to recharge your batteries when you’re down. When you’re in the doldrums it’s already too late!

In tough economic times, “retail therapy” may put you on a temporary high, but it will ultimately make you feel worse than ever. A great resource is Woman's Comfort Book: A Self-Nurturing Guide for Restoring Balance in Your Life by Jennifer Louden  She has all sorts of ideas for simple, low cost activities to lift your spirits and comfort your soul.

Although it is written for women, there is no reason men can’t also benefit from some of its suggestions. We’re all in the human boat together, and men also need nurturing. I particularly like her suggestion about putting together a “comfort drawer” of little treats for down days – things that don’t involve excess calories! Heading for the refrigerator is another of those common self comfort routines that ultimately backfires on us!

Order Ms Louden’s book from the library or grab a second hand copy from Ebay or Abe Books. It will be worthwhile investment in your mental health, and would make the ideal gift for a friend who is down. Enjoy!
