When my mother was feeling out of sorts she used to describe herself as “discombobulated.” I thought it was a word she had made up, but I recently discovered that it is in the dictionary. I still think it’s a great word! It perfectly describes a day when nothing is going quite right – or maybe it is going right but it still doesn’t FEEL right.

There are days like that. For some unspecifiable reason we just feel out of step with life. It’s as if we got out of bed on the wrong side and never found our footing again all day. But what I have learned about these days is that they generally pass without anything really bad happening. That feeling of impending doom comes to nothing. None of the catastrophes that I fear are lurking behind the door come to pass.

Whatever mysterious “something” it is that causes a Day of Discombobulation may never come to light. I have learned to live with it. It’s a case of “this too will pass.” So next time you’re feeling discombobulated, don’t add to your frustrations by trying to unravel it. Just accept that tomorrow will be a better day and leave it at that!
