Garlic is a wonderful substance. It is a natural antiseptic, so it is very good for warding off bugs. Many people take it as a preventative against winter ailments. Travelers also benefit from taking it – it protects against tummy upsets and thins the blood, which lessens the risk of blood clots caused by long airline flights.

But there is a caution attached. It is not recommended for those facing surgery. Its blood thinning effect can lead to post operative hemorrhaging, so stop taking it a couple of weeks beforehand and don’t start again until you are properly healed.

Tradition has it that garlic protects against vampires, but most of us are more worried about garlic breath offending those who come close. Don’t worry, there are odorless versions available from health food stores and good pharmacies.
