“I would like to do it, but…” “That’s a great idea, but…” “I should start it, but…”

Notice a pattern here? The word but always seems to precede an excuse! We all do it. We hold the word but out in front of us like a magical shield, vainly trying to protect ourselves from taking the actions we know in our hearts that we ought to be taking.

What can we do about it? Because essentially it’s another of those acts of self sabotage that we humans are so good at.

We can make the but Word work for us rather than against us simply by noticing when we use it. Become conscious of it. Be aware of the times you use it and ask yourself why you are making excuses. What is it that you are trying to avoid facing up to? What is the underlying fear involved?

It may take a bit of digging to unearth the underlying answer, but you’ll get there eventually. So get off your but and turn excuses into actions!
