Growing Old Disgracefully
For my 50th birthday I bought myself a motorcycle. My children have never quite recovered from the shock. Revenge is sweet! I leave on Friday on a 12,000km odyssey around Australia. The first phase will see me riding across the Nullabor Dessert into South Australia, dodging roos and road trains, then across country into New South Wales, then north into Queensland.
After a week attending a motorcycle meeting of 4000 aging bikers whose motto is “Grow Old Disgracefully” I head west into the Northern Territory, returning “over the top” to Perth in Western Australia via Katherine and Broom. It’s the equivalent of riding from LA to New York and returning via Seattle. I’ll be away about three and a half weeks. And will see a lot of Red Earth.
If you’re as old as I am, you’ll remember Meatloaf’s song “Bat Out Of Hell.” Part of the lyrics go:
“Im gonna hit the highway like a battering ram
On a silver black phantom bike”
Well, my bike is a silver Hyosung GV650 and the Old Bat Out Of Hell is on her way….
