Happier Holidays, Pt II
This year more than ever people are going to be feeling the pinch at Christmas. Given the fact that 90% of gifts do not hit the mark and are unappreciated (yes, really!) now is the time to look for better ways to get through the holiday season without committing financial suicide. Some suggestions:
- Make agreements with others to give each other the gift of NOT exchanging gifts.
- For those people who insist on gift giving, set a realistic dollar limit.
- Agree that only the children in the family will be given gifts
- If you have a big family gathering, hold a gift lottery – everyone draws a name out of the hat and that’s the one person you get a gift for.
- Agree to trade gag gift from the dollar store – it really IS the thought that counts.
- Make gifts – hand made things really are beyond price. Sew it, bake it, paint it.
- Agree to make donations to an appropriate charity in lieu of gifts.
- Create wish lists so people at least get things that they want and/or need.
One size does not fit all, but don’t let your pride stand in the way of tackling the gift giving issue. You’ll be amazed how many people will be relieved to be offered an “out.” We’re all feeling the financial pinch. Getting off the gift giving merry go round will go a long way towards creating happier holidays.
