I come from a land Downunder. I live in the city where Heath Ledger was born and raised, and where only a few weeks ago he was drinking with his mates at the local pub, away from the hype of Hollywood and the ever present paparazzi.

I am not a celebrity worshipper and I don’t follow the gossip columns. But when I see a film I enjoy I respect the talents of the actors who bring it to life. Even more, I respect anyone dedicated enough to live their dream, whether it be making a movie, surfing the perfect wave or writing the story that dwells within them.

In less than three decades, Heath Ledger not only lived his dream, but he lived it modestly, and without losing touch with his Perth roots. Whatever rumours dog his death, it is his life he’ll be remembered for long after the paparazzi have cashed their last checks on his legend.

Our boy has waltzed his matilda all over, but now he’s coming home to be laid to rest beneath the gum trees, in the city he loved so well. May he rest in peace.

I will always recall those wonderful words from “The Knight’s Tale” when I think of him:
