To make affirmations work more successfully, they need to be stored in the correct section of the brain, as discussed in my last article, but there are a couple of other things you can do to help them “stick.” By associating affirmations with all the senses, you can greatly improve their effectiveness.

When first you start working on “inputting” your affirmation, choose a suitable piece of music and a fragrance to accompany it. For example, if you were working with an affirmation such as “I remain calm at all times” you might select some soothing classical music and a calming essential oil like lavender.

Find a quiet spot, set your music playing, then dab a little of the fragrance on your temples. As you start to repeat your affirmation, tap the index finger of your right hand lightly on the crown of your head, your right temple, under the nose and on the chin. At the same time, direct your affirmation towards your Fact File (see previous article).

What you are doing is engaging all your senses with your affirmation. Repeat your affirmation once a day for 21 days using this full sensory input, but also wear your fragrance and play your music a lot. Tap those acupressure points when you remember to. That way you also have numerous subliminal reminders of your intention throughout the day.

If you use this “whole body” approach to affirmations you will get powerful results. Affirmations work. But they work much better when used with full sensory engagement!

PS If you are left handed, then you may need to reverse the instructions regarding tapping acupressure points and the location of your Fact File.

PPS Engaging the sense of taste as well is not recommended as you don’t want to train yourself to eat more!
