Each year the Museo dei Tarocchi in Riola (Bologna), Italy hosts a new tarot project that invites artists to create an original work of tarot art following a specific theme. The chosen contributions are then published by the Museum as unique, limited edition, collectable tarot decks.

The 2008 project is called LITERATAROT...

The overall theme is literature. The goal, to merge a recognizable element of literature to the traditional and symbolic meaning of a specific tarot card image.

I am part of a team of 22 artists from Oceania that will work on a tarot card deck consisting 22 Major Arcana cards, one by each artist, each card’s artwork being based on any great classic of literature, contemporary or historical. (Yes, this does include myths, legends and fairy tales.) This combined with decks from 4 other continents will complete the LITERATAROT project.

I chose to depict the Fool as Winnie – the – Pooh in the style of the original A. H. Shepherd illustrations, as we all start our life journey as a child, and I also wanted to refer to the first Tarot deck I ever made that started my own Tarot journey, in which I showed The Fool as a teddy bear.

It’s been a great project, but I’m glad my card is off my desk and on its way to Italy. I can’t wait to see the finished project. If you’re planning a trip to Italy it would be a fantastic place to visit. Otherwise, visit the museum on the web:
