Most people think of crystals as beautiful, expensive, jewel-like substances. But there is one that is found in most homes, often overlooked, but with virtues that have been recognised since ancient times.

Salt has long been a sacred substance – its use in religious practices goes back to the earliest times and is found across most cultures. It is magically powerful because it is essential to life, but too much destroys it. For instance, sowing a field with salt will render it sterile. It is used for purification, protection and grounding, and in money spells. Salt water is also used as a blood substitute in magic, just as saline is used medically to substitute for blood.

Hanging a small bag of salt near the front door, preferably from the door handle, protects the house. Strewing it around the house purifies, and removes negative influences. Holy water for purification purposes can be made from spring water with a little salt added, and blessed. A bath with salt added to it can be used for personal purification.

To make a money-attracting talisman, place some salt in a small green bag, together with a green stone, and the wax drippings from a green candle, carved with dollar signs, left burning while the other ingredients are assembled. As you work, visualize money flowing towards you in a steady stream. Keep the talisman in your purse, in your cash register, or with your bank statements and financial records.
