Spreads
Beginners often find the concept of spreads a bit of a mystery. The good way to think of it is like this:
A single Tarot card is like a paragraph in a book. Each card has several different meanings, so you can get quite a bit of information from it. It tells you part of the story. Put a couple of cards together into a simple "spread" and it's more like a chapter in a book, telling you more of the story.. If you use a more complex spread with several cards, then you have the full picture - you can read the whole book of the subject's life.
There is no real mystery about spreads. It's just a way of describing the way cards are pulled from the deck and laid down on the table to look at. Just using a single card is still a "spread" - but it's a very simple one.The most popular spread is still the Celtic Cross.
A good way to begin learning about this spread is to start a bit at a time. Work first with just the two central cards until you are confident with them. Then add two more ... and so on, until you are using the whole ten cards. There is no need to jump in at the deep end with the whole spread at once. Learn to crawl before you start running. It is good practice, as you won't be tempted to rush from one card to the next without properly exploring the full depths of the individual cards.
