Dr Miriam Nelson was doing some research on women with osteoporosis. She wanted to test the effectiveness of strength building exercise to improve bone density. Her control group made no changes to their lifestyle. Her test group did some modest weight training exercises. When she came to look at the results, she noticed something very interesting. Not only did her test group improve their bone density, they also lost weight, even though they weren’t supposed to be dieting.

After further testing, she came to the conclusion that stronger muscles burn more energy. In other words, “Strong Women Stay Slim.” She wrote a book with that title. It’s well worth a read! Check it out from your local library. She has a couple of other titles with the same general theme, all good reading.

PS Don’t be daunted by the idea of weight training. She’s not talking about turning into a muscle bound body builder. Most of the women she worked with were elderly. Her exercises can be done by people who are not at all athletic!
