There is an Indian proverb that says that everyone is a house with four rooms – one physical, one mental, one emotional and one spiritual. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time, but unless we go into every room every day, even if only to keep it aired, we are not a complete person. The room that is most often neglected is the spiritual one. The primary requirement for its upkeep is time spent on one’s own – time spent meditating, relaxing, doing nothing.

There is huge unconscious pressure on most people constantly to be doing something. But time spent doing “nothing” can be vital to our spiritual well being. So – light a candle, put on some relaxing music, add some oil of orange, lavender or sandalwood to your oil burner – and just BE. If you need to, tell yourself that you are doing something! (If you knew that you only had six weeks left to live, would you still be saying to yourself, “I just wish that I had finished more of that paperwork.”?)

Being in touch with your spirit brings wonderful rewards. You are less likely to achieve your goals only to find them hollow and empty. You are more likely to be relaxed and accepting of yourself and others, which will make you nicer to be around.

So what are you waiting for? Air out that unused room today!
