Partial Lunar Eclipse and Blue Moon on New Year's Eve

On December 31, 2009, we have a Blue Moon Lunar Eclipse. This is the most special New Years Eve we have had in a long time.

What is a Blue Moon?

A Blue Moon occurs when there are two full moons in one month. The second full moon is called Blue Moon. The occurrence of a Blue Moon is indeed rare, therefore the expression Once in a Blue Moon, meaning a long time; "something that happens once in blue moon almost never happens".

This type of Blue Moon takes place on average every 2 1/2 to 3 years.

What is a Partial Lunar Eclipse?

There is always a full moon the night of a lunar eclipse. Eclipses of the moon occur on average twice a year. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind the earth, so that the earth blocks the sun’s rays from reaching the moon. With the Earth in the middle, the three celestial bodies, the Sun, the Earth and the Moon are aligned exactly.  When they are aligned closely but not exactly, the edge of the earth blocks out only part of the moon causing a Partial Lunar Eclipse.

The shadow of the Earth has two distinctive parts: the umbra and penumbra. Within the umbra, there is no direct solar radiation. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the Moon enters the umbra.

For this lunar eclipse the moon will begin to enter the Earth's shadow at 6:17 p.m. EST.  The moon will enter the darkest part of the Earth's shadow, the umbra, at 7:52. The climax of the eclipse will be at 8:23, and the moon will finish passing the umbra at 8:53. The last traces of the shadow will be gone by 10:28. Because of its timing, this lunar eclipse will not be visible in North and South America, but it could be observed in most of Europe, Africa, and Asia.

The emotional effects of a Lunar Eclipse are as follows: before the eclipse emotional tension intensifies, to be followed by a sense of release and relaxation during the eclipse. When the eclipse reaches its climax, humans experience a level of deep relaxation. When the moon reappears, people feel emotionally refreshed.

The co-occurrence of a Blue Moon and Lunar Eclipse together with the New Year's Eve is indeed a very special time to practice rituals, Creative Visualization and meditations to improve our life condition.

Take full advantage of this unique occasion. Light candles, make wishes, celebrate!

Peace, Love & Light,

Iris
