Erasing and rerecording those old “negative” tapes

Our past “negative” experiences are recorded in our internal tape recorder – our memory bank, emotional bodies, all the way down to our subconscious mind.  They stay there like something you type on your computer and click “save.” They are always there to be played.  Just click “play” and recycle all of the bad memories, over and over again.  With every new negative experience comes the validation of the past, adding more to your catalogue. “See, I knew things wouldn’t work out for me.  They never did and they never will!”  Every new disappointment becomes a validation of those old tapes, validating past pain and hurt, adding fuel to the already existing fire.  It seems that everywhere we turn, there’s something “bad” waiting or lurking.  Not only are the old tapes there, but new negative information keep getting recorded, creating even a larger catalogue of painful tapes, overloading ourselves by creating a miserable recorded library that is loud, cacophonous and dark.

How do we erase those old tapes, and rerecord new and positive tapes?  Here are some points to consider:

First, work on affirming peace with the past daily. A great affirmation for this is “I am now at complete peace with all that has happened before.” Making peace with whatever happened before, in the best way you can, has multiple benefits:

Health – Less negative emotions means better physical heath for any of us.

State of mind – Releasing past hurt frees up our mind to think more clearly and more rationally.  Basing our perceptions on past hurt is like driving your car with a dirty windshield.  It’s murky, hard to see, and everything looks unclear.

Relationships with others - A less negative person is infinitely more enjoyable and pleasant to be involved with.  This builds more harmony in your life, as you will be more easy to interact with. People will certainly like you more!

Day to day – With less baggage within, we are lighter, more free, and can move throughout each and every day with more ease and flow.  It’s like taking a 100 lb, sack of potatoes off of your back.  Think of how much easier it would be to simply walk down the street.

Making peace with what happened before lessens the power of new experiences that may be difficult.  If we’re only dealing with a current problem as opposed to a current problem triggering countless former problems on top of the current issue, this one current problem is just that – a single issue that we can focus on and resolve!

Erasing old negative tapes means it is less likely for new negative experiences to happen.  Why?  Because we indeed largely create what we fear.  Meaning, if you’re looking for something, you’ll find it!  Old fears and defense mechanism once worked to protect us. Fear is designed to keep us alive and surviving and is always on the lookout as out eternal watchdog, designed to protect us from new negative experiences.  But often, those old fears are no longer needed.  For example: If we ran away from love because we were in an abusive relationship before, it is no longer necessary to run away from relationships.  By erasing these old tapes, someone new and wonderful can indeed come into the picture.

It doesn’t matter if what we believe in is good or bad.  God and the universe often function as an equal opportunity employer.  Whatever we believe becomes true.  If we have a perception of the world as a bad place, we will manifest bad experiences. Try to see whatever good came out of the past hurts and pain. Remember the spiritual maxim ‘Take the lesson and throw the rest away.”  You had those experiences for a reason.  Take what you have learned, as learning helps you to grow.  The emotions on the other hand, only help to cause you more pain.  Use all the tools you have, probably more that you think:  forgiveness, gratitude, trust in what God has brought to you, and your own ability to grow, change and build new goals and dreams. For example: When someone loses a job, it may be devastating at the time, both financially and emotionally.  But losing that job may be the very thing that opens up the door to a new and even better job. Look toward every single positive thing that came out of whatever happened before.  I like the concept that I once heard which is “that out of all tragedy, there is something divine.” By reinforcing a positive view of past experience, we step by step literally erase those old negative tapes.

Do your best to make every day and every experience a positive one at that.  We accomplish this by not dwelling on the past, and not living in the future.  All we really have is now!  Every positive word, every positive thought, every kind deed, contributes to creating new recordings in your internal tape library.  These new recordings can then define your journey, not only helping to attract all that is good, but making each day lighter, brighter and more positive.

Yup - Need to throw out the rusty old jukebox and get a new ipod nano!! And for sure, its easier said than done...It almost feels like the old tunes are stuck on a broken record and have to be erased & rewritten note by note.

Someone once gave me this very useful tool: Everytime you catch yourself with a negative old tape (angry words, self criticism...etc.) diminish its power by deliberately replaying it in the voice of a character you think is truly comic..e.g. Voice of Mickey mouse, Scooby doo, Daffy duck or Bozo the clown etc. & observe your emotional response to the very same tape. Then visualise/imagine very clearly the new replacement tape (affirmation/anything you want manifest in your life), in the voice of someone you trust & admire. It takes some awareness to do but the results have been wonderful for me (& given me a chuckle or two). Just thought I'd share. TY.
