OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD - GIVE THE DOG BACK!

Once again, the headlines have gotten my dander up, and I need to vent. Once again, it's about a dog. Ellen De-Generous adopted a dog from a rescue outfit in California. Try as much as she wanted, the dog did not adapt well to her household. So, she gave it to her hairdresser, where the dog was promptly met with open arms by the family which consisted of two young girls that absolutely LOVED this dog. When the rescue organization discovered that Ellen gave the dog away, they went and got it back. In their "rules" an adopted dog must be returned. The rescue people actually went to the home where the dog was and ripped it away from this family.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the whole point of a rescue dog to FIND a home??? I understand that there are rules in place for a reason. Some stoopid idiot eons ago probably gave this organization a need to put this rule in place. However, does it really make sense for them to go and "rescue" the dog again from a loving family? The children that bonded with this dog are heartbroken. And, it's so convenient that this particular organization doesn't have a phone, otherwise it would (I'm sure) be inundated with angry people calling.

Ellen was crying about this - and if you've seen the video - or watched her show, you know that she is sincerely sorry for not reading all the fine print on the adoption papers that she signed for this dog. The plea that she made was so heartfelt, just listening it's obvious to feel her pain.

It's such a truly sad state of affairs as far as I'm concerned. I just say: GIVE THE DOG BACK TO THE FAMILY. Maybe then, everyone can be happy.

***********
Thanks for allowing me to vent.

I am completely with you on this one, what defiance I have left in my heart, I found the site and sent an email saying about the same thing. Ok, I might have made a reference about them running their organization like a politician in Washington, LOL.  I went back later, and the site was down. So probably more than you or I have thought their policies were a little backward.

Well maybe, they will be giving the dog back after they check things out to make sure for they're own purposes that it is an appropriate home.  Maybe that part of the story isn't known to the public yet and they are making their best efforts to ensure their dogs have good loving homes.  Maybe they can't take Ellen's word for it and just want to check it out on their own. I hope so anyway....because anything else wouldn't make sense.

I have friends that operate rescue organizations for various breeds of dogs. They ARE protective of them (for example, they don't want to place rescue dogs in homes that will just turn around and sell a dog or use it for breeding). Ellen clearly pointed out that she had the dog neutered, and all in all paid about 3,000.00 in vet bills, and training. Nothing worked, and she was sick about it. She sobbed on national television that she was wrong for not reading the fine print, but that she THOUGHT she was doing the right thing.

I agree with you, Amy, that they  probably wanted to check the home out; so why wouldn't they just do it when they went to take the puppy?

I'm sure the website crashed with all the people expressing the same sentiments. I PRAY that they will do the right thing, and place this puppy BACK with the family that loved it.

According to Associated Press, as of this morning, the owners of Mutts & Moms (and Paw Boutique, the venue where M&M is located) have stated that they will not give the dog back to the family based on principle. They have also hired an attorney stating they will sue Ellen for defamation of character because they have received boycott and death threats. I'm sure the last thing they expected was for Ellen to go on national TV and pour her heart as she did.

I understand pet rescues have rules; but I feel these people are being selfish based on their "principles."

Defamation? Death threats? Wow. And THEY are suing HER? Double Wow. I truly feel for the judge in this case. I'm wondering what exactly their "principles" are? You're right, they are being stubborn and just selfish.

I'm wondering if this is more about ego.  I mean if an animal shelter doles out a dog to a celebrity, it gives license to a wonderful picture of Ellen and a dog on their client wall right?  Thats clout for the animal shelter/manager/previous owner.

Then celebrity turns around and gives the dog, to an ordinary person with out fame.  Down comes the celebrity picture.  Love?  Whats that? Now it has gone from Client Ellen owning the dog to Client Ellen having her nose rubbed in the dirt by the Animal Shelter...and they still feel cool.  Really, whats love got to do with it now.  Worse, every home the dog gets transferred to messes its head up more and more.

You bring up some excellent points, SisterO. This isn't about what is right for the puppy at all! I read that the women who own this place 'refuse to be bullied' by Ellen. Excuse me, but whom is 'bullying' whom? It's certainly a passionate issue, that's for sure; one that I hope gets resolved soon.

As a huge Ellen fan, and an even bigger animal lover, I think this so-called animal adoption agency has lost sight of the big picture.  I don't support threats of violence, which apparently the agency owner has received, but if it would help to bring about a sensible resolution to this matter -- return the dog to the loving family -- people should write letters to the agency in support of just that!

Thanks for writing about it, Jane!
