Saying Goodbye to Honey Bear.

I want to share with you Honey Bear today. As you can see by the pictures, she is one of the most gentle, unassuming, and sweet natured dogs in the entire world. I will never forget when I first got Spike (the little rat in a dog suit), my Yorkie Carley was so jealous she wouldn't have anything to do with him. My friend brought Honey Bear up to the house, and she held a silent meeting with both of them, as if to say "Look, kids, you NEED to get along and that's all there is to that!". (of course now Spikey and Carley are BFF's)

Putting a dog down is never an easy choice. As with my best friend, our dogs are an intrigual part of our lives. Most times I feel as if I'm just watching my dog's home while they live here. I've had to put down 5 dogs, all due to the fact that they were getting ailments affiliated with just being old. They've been 15-16 years old. I was with each one of them as they took their last breath, and I said goodbye to them. My thought is that they deserved me to be with them in their hour of need for me, because they were always there for me.

Honey Bear has such a calming influence on everyone, and I adore her. She is so loved, and gives love easily. My friend rescued her from the shelter where she had been in an extremely abusive home, and it took forever for her and her husband to bring out the softer, trusting side of Honey Bear.

For Honey Bear not to be able to run along the mountain trails, chasing squirrels and butterflies - that would surely mean death for her, anyway. To have to inject her with life supporting drugs, as she lies helplessly - this would surely mean death, also, because she can't do what she instinctively wants to do.

It's really a difficult time for her owner, my best friend. Honey Bear has an illness that can't be treated, and the decision to keep her on a multitude of drugs and watch her deteroriate despite the drugs, or to 'let her go' is rapidly approaching.

I'm saying Goodbye to her today, because I'm relatively confident that my friend is going to do right by Honey Bear, and say goodbye to her, also. And, I believe that ALL dogs go to heaven where there's an endless supply of milkbones, squirrels and butterflies to chase and ample green fields to run.

She has forever touched my heart,
as ALL special beings should!

# re: Saying Goodbye to Honey Bear.

It is hard to lose a pet.  I'm sorry for your friend.  I wanted to share something maybe you've see already:
The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

What a beautiful story! Thank you so much for sharing it!

Does anyone out there have the "Pet's Prayer"? I've seen it so many times, it always brings tears to my eyes, yet I can't find my copy.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend's lost of a beloved pet.  I have had pets most of my life.  I have put down three precious dogs myself.  I miss them all terribly but sense their presence!

Is this the prayer you were referring Jane?

Pet's Prayer
If it should be, that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.
We've had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer, so,
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend only,
Stay with me to the end,
And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will see
It is a kindness you do to me
Although my tail its last has waved
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Don't grieve it should be you,
Who decides this thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
Smile - for we walked together,
For a little while.

Blessings,
Amy
