One of the spreads I work with uses nine card and it stems from the three card past, present and future spread. I added six extra cards, one that goes in it's own row on top of the three base cards of the spread-these represent the outer influences of the past present and future. Another words the things that are the most obvious to not only yourself but the ones around you as well.
The bottom row represents the the inner influencess of the matter-another words this row shows a more personal, inner side of the questioners question. The things that come up in this part of the spread tend to refer more toward your emotional state during the phases of your situation.
This spread when fully laid out looks like a square, it has nine cards and they all together make a 3x3 sqaure.
They are read as follows:

Card ONE is laid out on the left-this represents the past or where the questioners question began.
Card TWO it laid above card one and this one represent the outer circumstances of the matter and how it played in the past.
Card THREE is is placed below card one, this one represents the inner more personal details of that played in the past.
Card FOUR is laid next to card one(on the right). This card represents the present, where the questioner currently stands in the scenerio.
Card FIVE is placed above card four, this one represents the outer influences of the present and thing currently going on around you.
Card SIX is laid below card number four and this one represents the questioner personal feelings and emotions about how the situation is personally affecting him/her.
Card SEVEN is laid next to card four (again to the right, you don't cover any cards in this spread). This card shows the possible outcomes if the person stays on the path they are on.
Card EIGHT shows how outer circumstances and people around you are going to be affected by this outcome.
Card NINE shows how the outcomes could effect your inner emotional state and out looks.


This is a great spread and it's the great for relationship amd career questions. This spread gives you a full look at the various facotrs in play (yes, even the ones you may not want to hear).
