What My Keen Callers Teach Me

Nobody Told Me Nuthin'!

Hi again, gang!  I was thinking today about how often we hear people complain about not having been told something absurdly specific as children.  I've done it myself, of course, and it always makes me laugh.

One of the most important things a parent can teach a child is to trust her instincts, instead of spelling out rigid codes of behavior for every situation life might present.

It's important to just trust ourselves and believe what we know to be true in our hearts.  (A little common sense helps, too.)

In my sillier moods, I imagine modern thinking to go something like this:

"No one told me it was wrong to starve myself to be thin!"

"No one told me that chasing men who treat me disgracefully was wrong."

I sometimes wonder exactly who we thought was going to tell us these things, don't you?

I mean, you cannot honestly be waiting for someone to say, "You may accept yourself exactly the way you are.  It is okay.  I give you permission."

Just who might that grand and powerful being be?

Oh, yeah - that's right.

You.
