Saturn changes signs every two and a half years and this will change the energy in the world and in our personal lives. Saturn is considered the planet of structure as well as restrictions, and obstacles and shows us where we meet our greatest challenges in life, and where we have our greatest success.
Saturn operates on both the collective level affecting us as a civilization, and on the personal level in our own lives. Saturn’s transit through the sky and through our own natal chart will determine the course of our life over the next two and a half years and show us where we will have to work harder.
Saturn entered Libra October 2009, and has been in the sign ruling relationships of all types, government, and the law. Planets in Libra seek balance, which is often lacking. Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet connected with love and money. Over the past several years, money has been in scarce supply for many people, and relationships have been front and center, including the issue of gay marriage. Saturn in Libra has been aptly referred to as being in the sign known as “the iron fist in the velvet glove.” Being in an air sign, much about the realm of Saturn in Libra has been on the mental plane. While in the sign ruled by Venus, Saturn in Libra has a certain refinement to it.
The last time Saturn was in Libra was 1981-83 and in the US we experienced a recession during that period. Current money woes have not all been due to Saturn in Libra. Pluto in Capricorn has been the planet that has driven the world to the edge of an economic abyss. In 2008, when the economic situation reached its peak, Saturn was in Virgo opposing Uranus, and Pluto had just entered Capricorn, the sign ruled by Saturn the taskmaster and the planet of restriction. Then, there was the cardinal T-square between Uranus-Saturn and Pluto, shaking up the world economy and shifting wealth in 2010.
Saturn in Libra has been a trying period for the cardinal signs; Cancer, Capricorn, Aries and especially Libra. Saturn always paves the way for a difficult period when it is in your own sign. I generally tell clients they are re-creating themselves when Saturn enters their own sign every 30 years.
Saturn leaves Libra to enter the sign of Scorpio on October 5. The last time Saturn was in this placement was December 1983-November 1985. Scorpio is the natural ruler of the eighth house of other people’s money, taxes, sex, death and rebirth. It is the most intense of signs, and it is a water sign. Whereas Libra has refinement, Scorpio has intensity and is ruled by Mars, the God of War, along with Pluto, the planet of transformation. As a water sign, it is more emotional, and whereas Libra energy may be refined, Scorpio energy is shrewd. Scorpio energy will take things from the mental Libran plane to the desire and action stage, and make us fight for what we want in a far more obvious and direct manner. Those who have agendas will be in a ‘fighting mood,’ to achieve their goals.
During the two and a half period Saturn is in Scorpio we will collectively be dealing with societal wounds and the healing of personal wounds. Llewellyn George wrote, “Scorpio in Arabic and Syriac is Ali Akrab, meaning wounded, conflict, war. In Coptic it is Isidis: attack of the enemy, oppression from deadly foes.” So, during the next two and a half year period we will be dealing with old wounds and issues both on a collective and personal level as individuals.
Saturn in Scorpio will be a transformative process, and since it is related to the eighth house it means the tax structures will change. This will alter the tax base in the US, and other counties, and there will be a focus in the US on the national debt. Individuals will focus on getting credit card and other debt under control as well. Since Scorpio is a fixed sign, it is likely the tenacity will be there to see some gains in debt reduction on a collective and personal level.
Since Saturn shows us where our restrictions will lie, many will no longer be able to count on money from partners or in some cases the government. There may be limitations when it comes to partnerships-both personal and professional, and we will see a depletion of jointly held resources, which can include government, investment, and other sources of jointly held funds.
Since Scorpio rules the house of sex, there will be limitations in sexual expression throughout society over the next few years. Will history repeat itself? The last time Saturn was in Scorpio during 1983-85, AIDS was emerging at a rapid rate along with other STD’s.
Death is also the realm of the eighth house, and over the next several years many baby boomers will be entering another phase of life and facing their own mortality. During the last Saturn in Scorpio cycle we lost many people to AIDs. Death will come into focus during this period.
When Saturn enters Scorpio it will be in mutual reception with Pluto. The sign of Capricorn is Saturn’s home. Since 2009 Saturn has been in Libra, creating a square to Pluto. (A square is a 90 degree angle considered difficult) When Saturn enters Scorpio it will create a sextile-a 30 degree angle-considered more harmonious. So in other words, the planets will be in friendlier aspect to each other, and create less stress. This is however a great deal of Mars-Pluto energy. Mars is referred to as the God of War, and Pluto the Lord of the underworld. So even in a sextile, these planets will be creating heavy and intense energies.
This does not however change the fact the two of the other major outer planets, Uranus and Pluto are still in a square to each other, creating friction until 2016. The Uranus-Pluto square will bring societal change and upheaval for the next four years not unlike the mid-sixties and the thirties.
