Medical Care For Children Should Be An Option For EVERYBODY!!
Economic times are tough for many these days. Many are finding it hard to make ends meet. My heart goes out to all of you. One thing  that particularly bothers me is that there are many children in need of various medical treatments that are falling through the cracks. There are various reasons why many are without health insurance and can't afford health care for their children, and just don't qualify for assistance. Many parents find that their children need some type of ongoing treatment that is not affordable. Parents are doing their best do stretch their budgets to take care of medical needs for their children. Imagine some unforeseen circumstances and not being able to meet your monthly obligation of medical expenses. Imagine a doctor threatening to discontinue treatment of your child, because you can't meet the huge monthly expense. This is what some are facing these days. Unfortunately, I didn't go to medical school and am not in a position to give treatment of any kind to your children. However, I am asking the medical care professionals to have a heart as children are innocent. It is not the child's fault the parents are struggling to make ends meet.  No one is asking that doctors start running charity clinics or anything of the sort. However, they can be in the position to make other alternatives. A doctor has the capability to look at the budget and see if they can negotiate a reduced rate, or accept lower payments. Discontinuing treatment for children in need should never be an option. My heart sank today when I heard a doctor was trying to force a parent discontinue medical treatment for their child because of money issues. My heart went out to the parents. This is an emotional issue because I do not have medical insurance, and have also struggled to pay medical bills for my children. Last year my son went through eye therapy that was rather expensive. I could not imagine what would have happened, if right in the middle the eye doctor refused treatment because I was late paying. In fact the eye doctor was nice enough to work around my budget and take lower payments. There are alternatives and trying to belittle the parents to pay up when they can barely afford treatment is not it.

Lexy - very good points - even though I am not american, it's my belief that so many people's debt problems could resolve in the US if they had better medical care for people who are uninsured.
Here in Canada it's unbelievable that a US friend of mine, a single mother, who gets into a car accident with her baby, has to pay all of her insurance claim towards the hospital bills - and incur some debt too. It's unthinkable and I am very grateful for everything I have gotten from the canadian gov in terms of any treatments. good for your doctor being ethical, and I hope your son is feeling better,

Yes, I was grateful last year that I was able to get what my son needed. However, this lady I speak of is not so lucky. I must say I question ethics, when a doctor is willing to compromise treatment of a child for the parent's inability to pay. I hope if any doctors read this, they will be more inclined to think of the child and not profits from the parents when giving treatment.

Dear Lexy:

I see kids and seniors falling through the cracks constantly in the United States.  I cannot get a physician most of the time to accept Medicare anymore and if your secondary insurance will not pay for the entire bill you can be in trouble.  I am an advocate for change in our health care system.  I want the same kind of health care for all of us that our Congressmen and women vote for themselves.  It makes me angry when we pay so much in taxes and still cannot get medical care in this land where we have so very much.

Lexy,

People often think the Dr is making dollars hand   over fist....this is not true for a majority of them. The insurance companies are the ones with the money. The Dr has liability insurance premiums that are outrageous. I know as patients we often think the Dr is collecting every penny, but we often forget to include the expense of being in practice. It is so obvious that health care reform is something our country is being forced to face. We have painted ourselves into a corner so to speak. The money seems to be going into the insurance companies pockets more then anywhere else. What about pharmaceuticals....they are receiving huge profits. Why is it Wal Mart can offer $4 prescriptions yet the name brand's charge $30 and up for the same medicines???? Greed has gotten in the way of health & wellness...this is just my humble opinion :)

Dr. Daragh,
It is my understanding that we are not suppossed to pay over 300% wholesale cost for medications according to billing advocates. I was charged over $200 for 2 generic pills in the emergency room that would cost less than $10 at walmart for the same thing.
Yes we do need to take the overhead cost into consideration for the doctor's offices.
Even with that said, something is not right about the system. The system is not working when children are not getting care they need, because parents don't have the funds.
Children are not able to get out and get a job, or make sure they have proper health care.
Employers are starting to be selective about having employess with health conditions in order to keep cost down on their end. It's a new form of discrimination. I have heard of cases where when someone appears to be using their health coverage more than their peers they get the boot.  Then we wonder why many are without healh insurance and can't get a job with health insurance.
My husband is a diabetic. You would be amazed with the job positions that have fine print you will not be hired if you are a diabetic. For instance in some states you can't be hired as a school bus driver if you are a diabetic.
His life insurance policy is 4 times the amount of the whole family combined. It is more than my power and phone bill combined every month.
To be able to afford health insurance for my husband it would be more than the income we make. Then the coverage would not kick in for 5 years.
To afford health insurance for my family who is healthy it would be more than my monthly rent.

Some criticize my family (even other family members) because we do not have proper health care coverage.
With this said, I am not the only person in the US without proper health care coverage. I understand what this family is going through. My heart goes out to them.

Great blog....just an FYI, if you live in Pennsylvania, we have what is called CHIP Children's health insurance of PA. (I think that's the actual name.) this month is medical coverage for children month. I think all states have something like this. I am not sure how to go about doing this, but if you go to google and type in CHIP for children's health care, you may come up with other sites to help. All children are eligable for health insurance here in PA and it is based on your income. Please check it out. I will post a blog about it too!

We have something similar in my state. However, it goes by income. In otherwords, it is difficult to qualify. Also, in my state you can not qualify if you are working for the state. It should be available to ALL children who are not covered no matter what the parents income.

Lexy,

Like I said....Greed has taken over the health & wellness industry.
I wonder if diabetics are unable to drive a bus due to the seizures they may have thus endangering the safety? I hear you on all of this, I am concerned for all children...The USA had a learning program called "No child left behind" now we need the same thing for health care. I only know my state laws and if a child needs shots for school..the state provides them at no cost without needing to qualify under income like welfare or assistance. The entire nation is facing this together....economic barriers are being crossed with this issue. Large companies face huge premiums, Dr's face huge premiums, hospitals have uncollected debt at the highest rate ever, people with pre existing conditions face rejection from a new insurance company, our troops need care when they return from serving their country...the list trickles down into every economic level ....this issue has no easy answer...however I wonder how the "most powerful nation" can't manage to take care of their own people. Why is it that other countries who do not have as much resource as we do manage their health care  better???  Greed ....seems to be the answer I come up with over & over. If the focus was strictly on wellness & health for our people...we would see a whole different plan put into action.

our health care system is a mess. ofcourse children should have free health care. stanford and los angeles hospital both offer care to every child regardless of their financial stautus. we have a long ways to go. hopefully people will make their polititicans accountable to help improve the healthcare system.

Dr. Daragh,
I can't recall what the fine print said about diabetics and driving a school bus, but it had nothing to do with seizures. I am just saying it is better if the doctors office and the parents can work together to come up with solutions. I agree there should be a no child left behind policy where health care is concerned.

I have to say it is bad when you cannot afford to pay for medical. It is a shame and yes they should think more of the children or just more of others. We used to be a world of taking care of thy neighbor. or the famous treat others as you want to be treated. SO I do understand this because there should be noone left behind not even a child
