" No man is born hating another person. People must learn to hate.
If they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
Nelson Mandela
This quote came to my mind this weekend, after encountering some very negative energy from others at a "family" party.
I use the term "family" because that is what we are to call people who are related to us by blood or marriage right???
Well, after my experience this weekend, I have decided to come up with a new term for some of the people that are related to us :)
My children were witness to adults who purposely chose to be angry & hate filled with their words and actions. There was no mistaking the energy they wanted to emit to others. Believe me, we all know when we encounter someone who does not welcome us or want us around. This experience was a bit different though as this was a "family" party, and we were visiting with "family whom we have only met once before, about a year ago. This was also a bit different for me because adults were purposely mean spirited toward children.
When I witnessed this, I could hear Nelson Mandela's voice speaking in my mind. It was as though he were there, whispering this quote into my ear. I figure my guides & angles were trying to help me stay calm, so that I could see beyond the hurtful behavior.
We left that party pretty early, as nobody was to keen on staying long. We did our "family" duty, we came, we visited, and we left just as soon as possible!
On the drive home, my 3 children wanted to know why this person was so mean, "why don't like us?" My 9 year old son, asked if he was naughty and didn't know because this person gave dirty mean scowls to him the entire evening.
I replied, "No you were not naughty, that is just her face and her expressions most if the time." My 14 year old then asked "well, why is she so mean?
It is hard for children and adults alike to understand why people attack without cause. It is even harder when they are "family" and you have little choice about having them in your life.
Being me, I just had to uncover the lesson of Light this experience.
I can't change the world but I can teach my children the best I know how :)
Nelson Mandela's message is clear & concise and so I shared it with my children. I know compassion & understanding are the best tools to use when confronted with people like this.
In the end, my son said it best, "well if she learned to be mean, she could learn to be nice if she wanted to be!"
Bless children for they see the world so clearly & simply state what they see :)
Lesson learned for all that evening :)
Choose kindness!
When confronted by anger & hate, choose compassion & understanding.
