~ What I Remember ... 9/11 ~
On this day in 2001, the entire world as we knew it was effected by the terrorist attacks on the United States of America.
The most powerful nation.....became a victim on it's home soil, something that had not occurred since Pearle Harbor.
The unthinkable became reality for the entire world to witness.
I can recall watching the attacks live on the TV and thinking to myself....this looks like a hollywood movie...this can't be really happening.
I lived very close to O'Hare Airport in Chicago at that time, and the sound of planes was a normal occurence in daily life. That day....the silence in the sky was eerie beyond description. The skys were grey and cloudy and completely silent.
As the coverage continued to stream on TV,radio & internet....I struggled to wrap my mind around what I was witnessing.
As the firefighters and police arrived after the first tower attack, the news anchor spoke of the NYFD Chaplan arriving on the scene and rushing in without any hesitation to help those he could. His name, Father Mychal Judge, O.F.M.
His story, along with so many others, has never left my head or heart since that day.
He perished along with so many others when the second plane hit the second tower.
~ Father Mychal's Prayer ~
Lord, take me where you want me to go;
Let me meet who you want me to meet;
Tell me what you want me to say, and
Keep me out of your way.
This prayer was written by Father Mychal and he recited it everyday. Those who worked with him and knew him, say this prayer sums up his spirit and dedication to service so very well.
I keep this prayer on my desk in a frame...the same copy I printed 7 years ago.
The strength of the human spirit, the faith(no matter the denomination), the ability to put others before self, the bravery, the compassion, the "difference factor" disappeared.....this is what I recall & hold onto from that time in history.
In the face of evil...goodness shone so brightly. In the dust & debris...people helping people, who ever & where ever they could.
Today.....I remember just how powerful evil can be...and how much more powerful goodness is!
To all of the victims of 9/11 & their loved ones, I offer my prayers.
I honor your greatness by honoring greatness in people & our world.
I believe in the goodness of man..I was a witness to you, true real life heroes.
Light & Love,
