As the job market gets tighter and tighter, here's the one thing you need to know most...

Subtitle: Fear is always a gift when you know how to use it. We weren't given fear just so we could suffer more. It's actually a very useful, valuable and necessary tool in your tool bag - when you know how to use it.

On the discovery channel they said there are three different instincts every species must have in order to survive. Fear, aggression and sex drives are essential to survival. If you don't have sense enough to run from a fire because you are motivated by fear, you die and your kids don't get born. That makes you a Darwin Award Winner!  (but don't take that link or you'll be there half the day)

Most of you know how to use fear.  Most of you have already polished up your resumes, got busy getting in line for alternative opportunities should the job you have, fall out from under you.  Some are in a real fix. My back up plan used to be sales. ha! That's kinda off the table for now.

Remember the most important rule about getting a job when everyone is applying and no one is hiring.... The best people for the jobs will for the most part NOT get the jobs.  The people who will get most of the jobs are the ones who are most highly skilled and educated in finding jobs and getting hired.  Lucky for you I learned that from working for years in personnel.  I know job hunting from both sides of issue. :)

It's not enough to know the tricks of the trade,
role playing before you go is essential.

If you're afraid you might not get hired, and who isn't these days...  do your homework, google the most common interview questions and answers, print them off, sit down with a best friend, some cold drinks with snacks and make a whole afternoon of role playing, you be the interviewer and interviewee by turns.  Don't quit playing one part and then the other until you know your own best answers like the back of your hand and they role off your tongue like beautiful sparkling crystals.

One of the most important things they're looking for is someone they can see they're going to  like, respect, enjoy and feel comfortable with for the long term. Choosing a new co-worker is like choosing a spouse only no one gets laid.   So go in there and show them exactly what they need to see: you be sure to like, respect, enjoy and get comfortable with them. See how easy that is? To get, you give. :)

Most people being interviewed are going to focus entirely on getting the job. They'll stress themselves worrying about messing up. They will worry about which job interview they can go to next. All I can say is those are bad, bad, bad ideas.  You don't want to be most people. You have to be the one that won that job. So again, do your homework well, then when you walk in there focus entirely on sincerely liking, respecting, enjoying and being comfortable with the interview process and the person who's interviewing you.

After  you land that new job, a couple of paychecks in where you're back on your feet.... then give me a call and ask me about your love life.

Now then, aren't you glad your psychic used to work in personnel.   :)

# re: As the job market tightens up, it's time to wise up - repost @ Monday, December 01, 2008 2:55 PM

Nice blog lollie.. at first I put nice glob lol. I use to practice interviews by trying to get 2 of them a year whether I needed a job or not. When you don't do it, you tend to get very nervous. So if you have not been practicing your skills try to have a friend ask you a few questions. There are always a few key questions almost every interviewer asks. AS lollie says you can find them online. Also always remember that cover letter!

I am in the habit of going into the job knowing I will get the job. They will like me. That confidence goes a long way and a bit of humor helps too. They will remember you better and you will stand out if you don't come accross like every other applicant!  Good luck to all who are looking out there!
