Subtitle: Willpower has NO place in an effective diet.

Anyone wondered why you haven't heard much from the Mad Diet Scientist in months?  Because I hit a helluva plateau.  I was still recording my calorie intake and burn at thedailyplate.com.  I was still eating the healthiest, most nutritious foods. What happened?

At first I was just grateful for finally hitting a new weight low without eating ice cream and cookies till I was back up over 230 again (all previous diets) I thought perhaps having never been a normal weight I was subconsciously sabotaging myself out of fear of the unknown. Maybe I just needed a pause. But damn, FOUR MONTHS??

I'd watch my calories and not feeling hunger, still want to eat, oh just another two or three or four hundred calories over the top... but it was only willpower that kept those numbers that low. Willpower? What the hell was willpower doing in an effective diet?? Willpower was NO part of the hundred pounds I'd lost already.

So I sat down and examined everything I was doing to see what I'd dropped off doing right that had made for such a stall.  Here it is. Seems such a small thing. Damned if it's not essential.  I had quit taking, morning and night: "Caltrate calcium plus magnesium" and the "Omega-3-6-9" (both available at walmart).

Those two supplements reduce stress. More specifically they really kill stress eating. Now if I go to bed and realize I've forgotten those two supplements, I'll drag my sleepy butt, suddenly wide awake with fear, "OMG!! Get up, get up, move, take em NOW!!!" Relying on willpower = weight gain in the long run.

My Diet Scientist recommendations today:

  • Don't waste time starting a diet if you're not going to take those two supplements.
  • If you're on a diet, start taking those two supplements.
  • If you just don't want to gain weight over the holidays, take those two supplements.
OH! And I wouldn't let myself write this till I'd lost another ten pounds. :)  I've now lost 110 pounds! Dr. Oz, where ever you are, I LOVE YOU!!!

Wow.  I had no idea.  Thanks for the tip!  I take fish oil pills and wonder if that is like the Omega 3-6-9.  I will check it out.

I am going to go out and buy those supplements today. I'm not sure I agree that there is no will power in a diet! You have lost 110 pounds and that is incredible. If you have given in to your cravings for fattening foods your diet would not have worked. I call that determination and will power! That kind of success is an amazing accomplishment!

Love,
Genny

Lollie- the greatest thing is that you are becoming more and more aware.  As with the rest of our life, one must take a look at what's working, what's not working, and be willing to make the commitment to implement whatever that is.

Awesome!!!

I just take the pills, they're large, rounded rectangular and easier to take than most even small capsules. I guess it's the coating. I've never felt one seem like it's caught in my throat like I have some capsules.

Fish oil is part of it. It's the perfect blend of the omegas we need. It's a combination of flaxseed, borage and fish oils. I believe they've got a generic version that's almost the same. You'll want to check the label to be sure.

I've lost a lot of weight in my life on willpower before Dr. Oz. But willpower cannot hold you to healthy foods in healthy amounts forever. It's like holding a penny in your hand straight out in front of you at shoulder's height. Pretty soon that penny is going to feel like it weighs 50 pounds.

I never feel even a tingle of hunger until it's time or past time for me to eat. I eat large servings of absolutely delicious, nutritious food.

The foods most see as desirable I see as the food industry's con job to fill us with unhealthy fats, high fructose corn syrup and too much salt because they know those three things stimulate us to over eat. I hate those barstarrds. I hate being conned into being miserably unhealthy. A girl told me the other day she must be allergic to healthy foods because slimfast made her sick to her stomach. SLIMFAST!!! She believed slimfast was a healthy food. Argh!! No wonder people think they have to depend on willpower.

So see? Really it's nothing to do with willpower. Stress eating was the only issue and it won't be again. :))

I really do talk too much. My bad.

Wow, Your weight loss is amazing...I have been eating healthy per Dr Oz for a short while but have lost little weight. I know I need to exercise more but of course hate to do that...I will add these two supplements and see if that is the missing key!  Thanks for your insights!! And Congrats on your weight loss!!
