What The Heck is a Psychic Buying Guide?

I start out normal enough. Say for example I wanted to buy a car.

  1. Like many people, back before the internet, I'd buy an Auto Trader, and highlight all the cars in my interest group and price range with a yellow highlighter.
  2. Then I'd check them against the repair ratings in Consumer Reports.  I'd mark out the lemons, which usually amounts to about 70% of the cars highlighted.  This narrows it down to between 4 and 10 cars.
  3. Then I'd get out my cards and ask myself how much joy, happiness and fullfillment each car would bring me if I bought it.

My coolest buying experience was in 1988 when I bought an '86 Honda, almost sight unseen.  I sorta saw it first. The thumbnail sized picture in the Auto Trader was fuzzy, distant and taken too close to night.  I could see it was a small car and in my price range so it made it to the list.

The cards on the Honda were basically love, love, happy, happy, joy, joy, love. That was far and above any of the cars I'd read about before - not just that day, but EVER.  I didn't know if it meant I'd love the car that much or if the car would lead me to a new man - but either way, I knew...

I had to have that car.

So I call the guy, tell him I'll get the money from the bank Thursday, bring it by and pick up the car.  He says, "Great.  No problem.  Have you given it a test drive yet?  No?  Well then do, be sure and come drive it first."

But I didn't drive it first, I didn't even go by and look. I'm not a casino gambler.  I've got no faith in the machines.  But I do like to gamble on me.  I love to gamble on my cards.  And that was as great a hand as you could be dealt on a car.  See?  I had to buy it without driving it first.  I wasn't about to spoil the excitement.  I'm human.  I could be wrong.  But I know me personally, and I'm probably right.

So I show up Thursday, didn't even look for the car, just went in and offered the guy at the desk the money.  He said for me to wait, the owner was detailing the car himself and would be right back.  So I waited, the anticipation so thick you could cut it with a chainsaw.

In comes the owner, I stand up, offer him the money. He said, "Wait.... have you driven it yet?" I said I hadn't had a chance to test drive it. Oh then he insisted I drive it first. (And they say no car salesman has integrity!) I explain I'm in a hurry and I trust him completely (which wasn't exactly true. I trusted my cards.) and anyways we went back and forth on it for a good five to ten minutes and finally he just sighs, shakes his head and says, "well okay, but you really, REALLY should never buy ANY car without driving it first."  So we sign the papers and go out to see the first car I ever bought pretty much sight unseen.

I was stunned.  I'd never seen a car quite like that before. It didn't look like the picture.  He was waiting for a response. "What do you think?"

I practically whispered, "Well, it looks sort of like a sport car."

I didn't take this picture and this is not my car. I didn't have a digital camera. So I borrowed this picture from -of course- autotrader.com

"Sort of?? Lady, that is a Honda PRELUDE." He started ticking off the features on the fingers of one hand, slapping them almost with the index finger of the other hand...  "It's the Japanese version of the Ferrari.  It's maxed out with every possible bell and whistle.  It's got 140 mph on the speedometer and it'll do every damn bit of it without breaking a sweat."

(I was still too stunned to be excited.)  "Wow. It looks brand new." My mind was spinning like a top though. "A sports car? Me? Me? I bought a sports car??" Honestly, it was just hard to wrap my brain around the idea.

"Did you even read the ad? It's got a brand new paint job!"

He got a little put out with me because he was clearly and sincerely in love with the car and the idiot he'd just sold it too didn't have sense enough to realize she'd just bought one helluva car.  I suppose it must have been like selling a prized dachshund puppy to a person who loves cats and doesn't quite know what to do with a dog.

It took me a bit to find out I LOVED having a beautiful red sports car.  I know, I know.  That sounds as crazy as the rest of this true story.  But I'd just never seen myself as a sports car kind of person.  I thought I was more of a Honda Civic kinda girl.  But it didn't take that car long to change me. :)

Gentle women and gentle men, let me tell you... that was the greatest car of my life!! (so far)  He was right.   It would do 140 without breaking a sweat.   I earned many speeding tickets and luckily only got three of them before I started using the cruise control consistently.   I drove it 5000 miles that first month and never got 100 miles away from home.  Curvy roads I'd been uncomfortable on in the past, that little prelude stuck to em like glue.

It did attract some interesting men, but none stood out like the car did.  It made me LOOK good.  It made me FEEL good.  It did everything but make me smell better and to be fair, at least it didn't make me smell worse. :)  Even though I'd never thought of myself in a sports car; even though it wasn't what I thought I was looking for... my cards led me to the greatest ride I've ever owned.

If you call me for a big ticket item reading, do your homework first, then have your choices on a numbered list and tell me you want to check 4, 5, or six of them, whatever number of them you've got on your list... and I can knock em out in no time. The reading is based on who you are, what you need and what you'll love. Everyone is different.

Just one important thing... you don't know me like I know me. When I tell you to buy a car, just to be on the safe side, drive it first.  No reader is always perfect for everyone.

Lollie you sound like me.  I bought our truck we drive right now sight unseen and had to travel across two states to pick it up.  I bought it from a client who I knew deep in my heart would never cheat me.  It is the best reliable vehicle I have owned for a very long time.  Not a sports car but I can haul my hay in it and groceries for a month!  I am a pickup kind of gal!  I will leave you to the red sportscar as I would probably kill myself in one!  Great story Lollie I loved it.

Great story!

Last year, I went in search of a new car from Toyota, in my 31 years of driving I have gone through 2 sedans, 3 Mazda 626's and a RX7.  I still have not completely understood why on that beautiful day in March, I drove off the lot with a huge dark grey Tundra, not being a truck person, but my Guide is the happiest spirit on the block, coz she gets to ride up front and above all the "little cars" on the road. Great story...love it!  My husband and I bought a Honda CRV about 4 1/2 years ago...best car we ever bought still runs great.  In fact he loves the Honda so much, he just bought a mower with a Honda engine?!?  A male thing I think.

I recently got rid of my 1997 (yes I said 1997) Mazda Protégé, which my husband affectionately referred to as the R.A.T. (really atrocious transportation) last month.  It was on its last legs!

I ended up buying a VW Jetta Wagon.  I never thought I would end up getting a WAGON!  To me it was kind of like buying a van.  Something I vowed I would NEVER own when I became a parent.  Nope not me...not buying one of those wagons or vans.  But I did the same thing...saw it online and KNEW it was the one!!

When we went down there to get it and the salesman asked the same thing, "Do you want to test drive it?"  I told him I didn’t need to, but my husband did and LOVED the way it handled the road.  I drove it home and fell in love all over again!  I loved everything about it as I knew I would right down to the purple/blue lights in the dash at night!  Me driving a wagon...who would of thought?!?   I love my fast, sport steering wagon.  It just took a week or so to get used to reverse being up by 1st gear!  I got an email the next day from a co worker saying..."Cute car!  I see you got a wagon.  Does this mean you're having another kid?"  LOL! See what I mean!

I am hoping this car lasts as long as the RAT...perhaps I should of called you first Lollie for my Car Reading!

Thanks again for the wonderful story!

What wonderful experiences you've shared! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! How great to find out I'm not alone! By the way, I have owned a dodge dakota for the last four years. I'd trade it in for something nicer, but it's still running great. It's got a lot of body work and it still turns young men's heads. Hmmm... yeah, maybe i DO need to trade it in! I'm thinking I need to get a vehicle that turns the heads of men in my own age group.

Great post Lollie.  You went with your gut feeling. Intuition is always right 99% of the time.  As the saying goes..we must walk by faith and not by sight. You felt that was the car for you (faith) even before laying eyes on it (sight). When we put good faith in something with no hesitation, its usually the right way to go.  Sometimes when our faith and doubt mix, we have to go the extra mile to investigate and get another opinion...thank God we have people like you who will steer us the right way with no gimmicks and let us no what is likely/unlikely.  You allow new callers to have a "test drive" when you provide new minutes..you also allow a "warranty" by admitting that you are right most of the time and if not, you're ok with eating your words and admitting to an off reading. It was a good test drive for me and I keep coming back for more rides! Thanks Lollie.

I wish I had come to you when I bought my car a year and a half ago. I got the car I wanted but it started having problems soon after. I was so happy to get the car because my old one had cost so much in repairs. Things seem under control at the moment and I'm cautiously optimistic about it but next time I need to make a big purchase I may check out my options with you first... Great story and glad it worked out for you!

Haha, I love this post! I'll be buying a new (well, new for me, but used) car after I graduate university (hopefully)! A beautiful red sports car sounds nice...

How Funny -- I went with my daughter to buy a 2005 Nissan Maxima and negotiated a great deal.. Upon furhter mechanical inspection, the car needed a $1600. part.. They kept stalling (for 3 weeks) until we decided it was a rinky dink business. We went to a dealership and got the same year car but this one ran beautifully. She loves it and likes the color even better. The original car was truly too good to be true. Thanks Ron

I bought a brand new 2006 Scion XA in 2005. I still like it but I know what type of car that I would love to have...a Nissan 350z. My car now does get great gas mileage though si I can't complain. I have put sooo many miles on it but its been well worth the buy!!!

You know something Lollie, you are something really special. If I did not know that there was nothing like the perfect human being,I would begin to think you are one. But knowing that you still have the same problems like the rest of us common people with out any psychic ability gives me hope for my own future.Keep up the good work.I find your brand of humor very refreshing.

Great story Lolls. I can't believe that you got 3 tickets!! It made me laugh because just the other day I put the car on cruise and it damn near killed me not to go faster. I believe I finally started taking your advise on those speeding tickets. I love my little sporty Corola S and your right, the right car makes you feel good, confident, hot, etc. What a great feeling!!
