The call started in tears. It was a full minute before I could calm her enough to find out the question. Her cat had been missing four days. She knew he was dead because he never stayed out even one whole night before that. All she wanted to know: was it quick or was he tortured? She was certain he was dead and wanted to know if it was a car, a catfight, or worse, cruel teens. She couldn’t sleep not knowing.
I read the cards, first miserable with the task and then delighted by the answer.
I told her the cat was alive, well and would be brought home to her five days later by a young family man, a son or nephew. He would find the cat accidentally because he would come home from a different direction than normal.
Well that only made her cry harder than ever. Now she really knew her cat was not coming home and that he was DEAD because her son was her only young male family member.
He went to college over a hundred miles away. He’d just been there that weekend, he certainly would not be returning in five days. Most importantly, they lived near the northern edge of town and the college was to the north, so there was no possible reason he would drive all the way around the town to return to her house.
But the cards were too clear. I knew they were right. Everything she said made sense and yet I know my cards and when they’re that clear – there is no mistake. So I told her to call me back in six days if the cat wasn’t home in five days.
I recognized her voice when she called and my mind panicked. How many days had it been exactly? I couldn’t remember. Damn. I was going to feel terrible if I was wrong. I was never wrong when it was clear.
I said, “Has it been six days already?” And then I heard the joy in her voice. “No! This is only the fifth day, but I had to call and tell you that my son is standing here right in front of me and Stickers is right here in my lap. You were right!” Once in a while clients will give me goose bumps or make my eyes water up... she hit the jackpot. Goosebumps? Check. Eyes watering up all over the place. Check, check!
Because the call had involved the possible death of a beloved pet, I hadn’t forgotten a bit of the reading so I told her I'd give her three free minutes if she'd just tell me how her son happened to come home sooner than expected and where did he find the cat.
As it turned out there was only one other young adult at that college from the same town and he’d broken his leg. Her son was let out of classes to take him home. He lived at the very Southern end of town and so he took the bypass, going all the way around to the southern end of town, dropped off the other guy and stopped at a convenience store. As he walked out of the store he saw Stickers sitting on a fence. He said, “Stickers, what in the world are you doing here?" He just walked over, picked him up and took him home.
The woman told me you could have knocked her over with a feather when her son walked in carrying her cat in, alive, well and without so much as a scratch.
She had every logical reason to believe I was wrong and I was right anyways.
I’ve had tons of readings just like that only without the cat. If I had a nickel for every woman I’ve told that she’d be back in bed with that man in two days and her absolutely convinced, determined even that it won’t happen – then sure enough there he is back – I’d take a vacation today. I’ve had two readings where it was personal friends and I’d literally go visit and there he is grinning like the Cheshire cat and she’s saying “yeah, yeah, I know, I know, you were right.”
There are times when we just don’t have a clear connection. That’s going to happen to everyone from time to time. And more often, the logical conclusions bear very little resemblance to what’s actually going to happen.
Fiction has to be logical or it doesn’t sell.
Reality on the other hand, never has to be logical.
And that’s why I read cards instead of novels. I love to be surprised.
