Tarot Card of the Day:

The Knight of Wands

Knight of Wands

The man represented by the Knight of Wands will be a loving and open-hearted person, with a strong sense of morality and a great sense of humour. He will be active, energetic and willing to help. You often find these types of men in the healing professions, or in other areas where they are required to assist, guide and support others.

He's a man with a deep respect for life and all living things, attuned to Nature and to the creatures of the earth. He has a deep well of compassion which spills over readily to anyone who needs his help, but he also has the restraint to know when too much assistance is a bad thing. Then he will act to enable and empower, rather than to assisting.

He's a faithful, and dedicated family man, being fully engaged in the domestic situation. His life reflects his high ethical standards, though he is not given to sermonising, nor standing in judgement on others. He could be defined as an idealistic realist - accepting the frailties of the race, whilst doing his best to strengthen it.

His faults spring from his good points - for instance, he dislikes causing pain, and will therefore delay when he needs to act if he thinks it will hurt other people. He will sometimes remain in limiting or painful circumstances because of this. His sense of rightness and duty is intense, and sometimes drives him to make foolish choices and decisions. He will shy away from conflict and unpleasant situations, especially when these arise as a result of his own needs, though he will never walk away from a struggle on behalf of somebody else.

If you are regarding this card as a spiritual change, then see it as an indication that the warrior of right and light is required - you'll need to stand up for something that matters, and which is unable to defend itself.

 It’s all in the cards

“What would you like to know?” Patricia Angelia asks as she shuffles tarot cards on a table, the air thick with the smell of incense.

The perfume helps the client feel more comfortable with an unusual – even paranormal – situation: Going to a tarot reader to ask the cards for advice or information. In this case, the man wants to know about his financial situation until the end of next year.

Patricia, a 24-year-old architecture graduate from Petra Christian University in Surabaya, spreads the cards out on the table, face down, and asks the client to choose one.

After he makes his selection, Patricia turns the card over and reads its arcane image.

“The economic situation in 2009 is actually going to be rather tough, but the situation will not be like the monetary crisis in 1998,” Patricia says. “You have to be careful to save and reduce shopping using credit cards.”

Although the global financial downturn has already affected the young man’s family’s finances, there is no need to worry, Patricia says, interpreting the message from the card: Fate will be changed by hard work, and they should not give up easily because achievements can only be accomplished through the belief of being able to move mountains, whatever their height.

“Keep praying and have a religious service according to your faith, and ask God where He can lead you,” Patricia says.

Tarot cards are an ancient form of fortune-telling, used by the gypsies in Europe. Now, they are
the guiding light for a number of young people in Surabaya, whohave joined together to form the Surabaya Tarot Club.

Although the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (Islamic Scholars’ Association) has issued an edict forbidding fortune-telling, tarot continues to be popular, particularly as Indonesia approaches the 2009 legislative and presidential elections, with some political parties seeking out tarot readings of the election outcome.

After receiving the message in the cards, the client is under no obligation or duty for follow-up as in other paranormal disciplines, which might require people to adhere to practices such as drinking flower water, fasting or visiting an ancestor’s grave.

“Tarot doesn’t relate to the mystical world,” Dante, the founder of the Surabaya Tarot Club, told The Jakarta Post. “The tarot reader isn’t a shaman, but does things similar to the things done by psychology consultants, like American psychologists when reading the map of a patient.”

Dante together with Dian Rishita Dewi established the Surabaya Tarot Club in September 2007. The aims of the club were to introduce tarot to the wider society and to eradicate the belief that tarot was related to black magic.

The club now has more than 50 members in Surabaya, 20 of whom are still learning. Those who want to learn must be more than 17 years old. Learning how to read tarot cards takes about a month, followed by many hours working alongside experienced fortune-tellers.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, or your religion or ethnic background, you can join this club. In this club, we are also taught to appreciate diversity,” said Muhammad Taufik, 24, who finished the tarot course some months ago.

Muhammad, an accounting graduate from a private university in Surabaya, is a Javanese Muslim. Among his close friends in the tarot group are non-Muslims, including ethnic Chinese and members from Manado. There are no barriers to communication in the club, he said, and everyone helps out when a club member is in trouble.

“Sometimes we predict each other’s fates and together try to suggest solutions to life’s problems,” Muhammad said.

As well as reading personal stories, some tarot readers claim they can foretell social conditions, political events, economic changes and other future incidents. And as the legislative and presidential elections draw near, they are getting a lot of requests from political parties.

So what do the tarot cards say about who will be elected president later this year?

Rosa Delima Tjandra predicts that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono from the Democratic Party has a better chance of victory than his main rivals: former president Megawati Soekarnoputri from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Wiranto from Hanura (People’s Conscience Party) and Prabowo from Gerindra (Great Indonesia Movement Party).

In making the prediction, Rosa was helped by two other readers, Dante and Anintya Kuswardani. The trio had previously made predictions for the East Java gubernatorial election, foreseeing that Khofifah Indar Parawansa and her running mate Mudjiono would be slightly behind Soekarwo and Saifullah Yusuf.

It turned out they were right. On Jan. 30, the East Java general elections commission determined that Soekarwo and Saifullah Yusuf had won by a nose – with a narrow margin of 43,104 votes.

The tarot readers also act as consultants to companies and take part in television programs and other entertainment events. Their consultancy fees range between Rp 1.5 million (US$135) and Rp 2 million.

As Dian Rishita Dewi, who works for a car company and is now a consultant for the PDI-P election campaign, has found, the cards can not only tell one’s fortune, but make it too.

“Fortune-telling,” she said, “can become a side job with a reasonable income.”
